Jasper Johns ๐บ๐ธ Painter โข Pop Art, Abstract Expressionism , by Howard Johnson on Jul 13, 2017 19:26:36 GMT 1, Come on brother. Why do you feel the need to insult me? We can all come to our own conclusions, and that's part of the fun. I've studied the lawsuits surrounding what is defined as a "fine art print" and these satisfy many of the categories discussed by the courts. Also, John's "supervised" the project, which goes much further then simple "awareness." I'm a lawyer, so my tendency is to look to what the courts have determined. Others will find other sources more persuasive. I'm not delusional, I don't think these are any more valuable then the prices listed. There's a difference between value and authenticity. Something can be authentic, but not valuable, and the other way around. "Facsimile" is defined as "an exact copy of printed material," that definition covers all prints derived from original images. Every Banksy print is a "Facsimile." A "poster" may be the better definition, but that also has its drawbacks as these were produced in a limited run and were not used for advertising purposes. Thus, maybe "ephemera" (a catch all term for authentic works by an artist but not recognized editions/OGs) is the most accurate definition. I don't have anything against you, but I think your conclusion here is ridiculous. I'm sorry but simply stating "I'm a lawyer" isn't enough to sway my opinion. What cases in particular are you referring to and how are they specifically relevant to the discussion at hand? As stated previously in this thread, ULAE provided further information regarding Johns' involvement in the project via email and it's clear that he did not "supervise" anything. They stated that he was "aware". And again, going back to intent, he was aware that they were producing a facsimile catalogue, not several editions of "fine art prints" as you so claim. I don't think your comparison to Banksy prints is particularly relevant. Those are multiples of an original image, whereas here, we are discussing multiples of multiples of an original image. That extra step, the very clear labeling on the prints, the lack of artist involvement, the lack of final artist approval, and the original intent make these anything but "fine art prints".
"I think your delusional" is unproductive and insulting. It sets a very poor example coming from a respected older member.
"I disagree" or "my opinion is..." would be a more productive way to begin your argument. Forum members really need to start treating each other with some semblance of respect, or we are going to lose what makes this forum so great.
My opinion has nothing to do with my profession, but I did study this exact topic extensively in law school. It was a really big deal in the midst of the Dali scandal, and continues to be debated to this day. That's how I came to my conclusion, and I encourage others to come to their own through research and the understanding of this long standing debate.
I've said my point and wont be posting any more in this tread. I shouldn't stuff like this personally, but I do. Thank you to all the kind members that reached out personally. Until my next find, bon voyage!

I have to say this is the most stimulating thread that has been on this forum in some time, which is great. Although, Christopher is right with regards to treating each other with dignity and respect here, even if we disagree. Personally, I agree with Christopher's opinion on these prints and have to add that the only reason they have the facsimile disclaimer on them at all is to differentiate them from the original prints. Other than that, the only difference is the size and that they are not signed and numbered. As far as who made the plates, who knows for sure. Whoever made them I'm sure it was with Johns approval. Furthermore, all these were done with his knowledge and you can bet your bottom dollars that at that time he wasn't going to let any of his work be replicated without his knowledge and approval. Additionally, I'm sure it would have been uncharacteristic of Ulae to do that behind his back. I think one of the coolest things about these prints is exactly what this thread is all about and that is the mystery of it all. The fact still remains, Johns did play a part in these prints. My opinion is that it was most likely more than anyone knows, because these are so old and a lot of the information is third hand. I think these "Fine Art Prints" are fabulous. If you have them, Enjoy.

Jasper Johns ๐บ๐ธ Painter โข Pop Art, Abstract Expressionism , by Deleted on Jul 14, 2017 0:46:34 GMT 1, In some ways it's good that the facsimiles were not made into a catalogue raisonnรฉ. With the prices of some out of print catalogue raisonnรฉs today. This catalogue produced this way would have been unaffordable to most people.
Facsimiles the technical term used by ULAE. They are highly collectable considering the history of ULAE producing the limited editions for Johns and other artists. It's the link with art history that makes these authorised facs such a good buy.
These type of authentic items don't come around very often. So i'm sure there are collectors who would be prepared to add them to their collection for a higher than original sale price and i'm sure in the future there will be one or two who will regret having sold them on.

Penguin Alphabet Soup is about to make the kitchen wall. Thank you for Sorting out the postage twice due to us moving from one end of UK to the other, it is so very much appreciated. On to JJ prints , I'm afraid I missed out due to being a cynical middle aged git. I rarely post these days but am in complete agreement, albeit drunk, and was very sorry to of missed out. So be it. Apologies if I'm hijacking the thread, but all this business about 'like culture', we are out here. Really loved the 0-9. Congrats to those that scored.

I order the 21st. Emailed them once early this week and they told me they were shipping later this week.
I'm located only a couple hundred miles away from them.
Well it appear my photobucket is broken now. Was working a couple days past others but now I guess it's time to move on.

Hope I don't regret it - they aren't expensive, but it's still a big spend for me.
Edit: Thanks to all on this thread, both for the original heads up and for all the research. It's been a great discussion.

She said they were hoping to have them all out by the end of next week. She said they got tons of orders, especially from overseas, and it has been taking them a while to ship out all the orders.
Hopefully everyone gets their order quickly and safely.

Yes, they must of received a ton of orders. When I called them on the 6th of July I believe I was told that they had received over 200 orders.

Jasper Johns ๐บ๐ธ Painter โข Pop Art, Abstract Expressionism , by Poly Mindset on Jul 18, 2017 22:53:33 GMT 1, Finally got mine in the UK today. False start 1 is a beauty. Agreed, it's very nice. If anyone has a FS2 that they aren't pleased with, I will gladly take it off your hands for cost. I picked up an extra FS1 from Dustbuster last week and would like a matched set. I called Ulae but since I already bought the portfolio they are sticking to their guns on limiting each print to only one per customer. I told them that this was silly because I will just have a friend buy it for me which was fine with them. Just thought I'd throw this out there just in case somebody wasn't happy with their FS2 before I call a friend and circumvent the system.
Finally got mine in the UK today.

Which ikea frame/size is that Christopher? Does the mount come with it? Not sure if having a wider mount at top than sides would bother me longterm or not...

Also - can I ask how you secured the print to the mount please ?
I have used (sparingly) tape in the past with Ikea frames (which are great value btw) that was supposed to be easy to remove and conservation friendly but ended up being an absolute sod to remove as it was so tacky and I'd hate to end up doing the same with these.
cheers

If self framing a cheap print, you can use self adhesive clear corners. The edge of the print slips in to them. They adhere to the back of the mount, so no tape or adhesive touches the print at all. Occasionally they slip and need reapplying. But that is much better than taping the print to the mount.
