Blast Series: The ‘Blast’ paintings are a new series created by shooting canvases with paint-filled plastic bullets specifically modelled on police baton rounds. The action technique used by War Boutique for these works generated some unusual and unexpected effects on the point of impact with the canvas, sometimes mixing the paints with such intensity of force that the primary colours completely disappeared (– as in ‘You Blue Me Away’). These works ask complex questions about the individual artist’s relative ‘free agency’ when representing the realities of violent conflict. They also contain further reminders of the interdependencies between war and popular culture, by subverting the individualism and techniques of the Abstract Expressionist movement – a movement that was heavily promoted by the CIA for political reasons. War Boutique commented: “With these new works I wanted to physically manifest some of the real force and impact of modern-day weaponry, and perhaps invoke our collective responsibility and choices around the use and development of such forces”.

That aluminium piece is gorgeous. How did you get it so shiny!

Hi Robo, the aluminium pieces from the 'Shooting Stars' series were given a final buff, after being shot with 9mm Parabellum rounds in the firing range, by the guy who polishes big shiny stuff for Anish Kapoor.
The individual reflections created by their site specific surroundings and how they play and interact with light are pretty amazing, either static or as you move around them
