NEW JR EDITION COMING SOON @ LAZINC., by Cookiemonster on Aug 1, 2017 17:20:24 GMT 1, ยฃ615 for what is most likely a Giclee. Rediculous pricing if so, is there any info on printing technique? At least the large social-animal editions are printed at idem so can somewhat justify the higher pricing. Whereas a 1000euros for a Pejac, edition of 80 signed poster, from a relatively unknown, uberhyped artist, is fair value for money?

Without passing judgement on the relative value of different artists, the Pejac release sold out in seconds. The JR prints are still very much available.

The only thing a quick sell out means is that the artist priced their work below market value... It certainly doesn't mean the artist is, or is going to be, successful. Tons ofs**t prints that people can't give away on here sold out at one point or another.
But as far as the artists go...
Here's JR's CV:
Here's Pejac's:
One pop up show?
They're not even in the same universe right now. I like Pejac's "clever" paintings, but to compare the two is silly...

As far as I can tell, he's a terrible photographer and would be better off selling hand-made collages at that price. Those might sell better.

The JR prints are still very much available. I like Pejac's "clever" paintings, but to compare the two is silly... As I said, I wasn't comparing or passing judgement on the relative worth of different artists, merely pointing out that if the Pejac print was overpriced at release and represented poor value for money, it would not have sold out the way it did.
For what it's worth, I happen to think both releases are somewhat disappointing. The CV (or lack of) of the artist has no bearing on that for me, I'm not entirely sure what point you were trying to make.

NEW JR EDITION COMING SOON @ LAZINC., by gravity1 on Aug 1, 2017 20:37:13 GMT 1, Aside from this being an aesthetic nightmare, I've just never understood the allure of a ink jet print of a picture of an outside work. At least this is by the actual artist, or he at least approved it, unlike Martha Cooper dropping a print of her photo of the Banksy BOTI piece which I think is as bad as it can get. How this can be even mentioned in the same ballpark as Pejac is beyond me.

At least this is by the actual artist, or he at least approved it, unlike Martha Cooper dropping a print of her photo of the Banksy BOTI piece which I think is as bad as it can get. How this can be even mentioned in the same ballpark as Pejac is beyond me. One of them has shown in galleries across the world, published multiple books, created movies, documentaries, a ballet etc, all featuring his unique style.
The other is a nameless (yes yes i know banksy blah blah pejac is not banksy) painter who's main selling point is how clever his paintings are.
You're right, they couldn't be further apart.
Side note: This place is hilarious. If you don't like a print, you complain about how it was printed? The technique is not the art. That's really that difficult a concept to grasp. For some artists i.e. faile, the technique (especially back in the day) was as much a part of the art as the actual image. JR's work exists out in the real world because the works relate directly to those places, and his prints are documented examples of those works. And by the way, JR is a photographer. So that photograph is the art as much as the wheat paste in it. Or should we all start complaining that Annie Leibovitz and David LaChapelle aren't doing silkscreened editions?

NEW JR EDITION COMING SOON @ LAZINC., by Lroy on Aug 1, 2017 22:43:02 GMT 1, I am sorry, before all, JR is a big machine ( I did not say trust but ) team, with a lot of helps from cultural, national - sponsorships/media/governments/local/towns/countries etc ... - , not only a good photograph. He has the big PR ever in what we call street-art ( is it ? ) Private sponsorships, corporate patronage too .. actors, realisators , Night aesthetician, or art hipsters lovers, with the biggest agenda of the planet lol ! Anyway, it it a bad artist because of that ? No. Of course not. Good job, would say bosses. The guy has talent, and the result is amazing ( just , to have seen some artworks in real, its more impressive in a pic that Jr took than in real : paper and paste maybe.
To finish, how to dare comparing the lonely Pejac to this big team Machine, even if the man, JR, is behind the artworks ?!

Bottom line is when you have to flaunt an artist's history and what they have done in the past to somehow justify why this particular piece is "good" it pretty much makes my point. Never said anything about JR's past works, photos or history. Some artist's works just don't translate well to paper, especially when location and scale are most if not all of the impact and this is a perfect example of that. JR's installations are usually great but they are "installations". His last 28 Millimรจtres installation print, with similar eyes, at least has some impact and is a great shot of his work from above. I just don't see the appeal of a picture of this installation, and let's be honest, this particular shot is nothing special by any stretch of the imagination.

Bottom line is when you have to flaunt an artist's history and what they have done in the past to somehow justify why this particular piece is "good" it pretty much makes my point. (1) Never said anything about JR's past works, photos or history. (3) You're putting words in my mouth, and then arguing against them.
1) I'm not defending this particular piece. In fact, earlier in this thread I said that I agreed with another commenter who said this release is disappointing.
2) I disagree with your opinion that his work doesn't translate, and in fact, some of his works like Migrants Walking can really only be appreciated when you see the photo. JR himself said "In a few hours during the night, JR and his team pasted Elmar, 20 years old who came from Azerbaijan, on the floor of Flat Iron Plaza in New York City. The image was 150 feet high. People walked on him all day, but no one really noticed him."
In fact, the majority of JR's work have been placed in areas where most people who know who he is will never actually see them in person (Kenya, Sierra Leone, Liberia etc.) He's been dong it for 17+ years - the lack of ability to appreciate the street pieces in person doesn't seem to have affected his career at all. Again i say, his photography is an integral part of the art.

(3)You're putting words in my mouth, and then arguing against them. People walked on him all day, but no one really noticed him." In fact, the majority of JR's work have been placed in areas where most people who know who he is will never actually see them in person (Kenya, Sierra Leone, Liberia etc.) He's been dong it for 17+ years - the lack of ability to appreciate the street pieces in person doesn't seem to have affected his career at all. Again i say, his photography is an integral part of the art.
