Without passing judgement on the relative value of different artists, the Pejac release sold out in seconds. The JR prints are still very much available.

As far as I can tell, he's a terrible photographer and would be better off selling hand-made collages at that price. Those might sell better. 

As I said, I wasn't comparing or passing judgement on the relative worth of different artists, merely pointing out that if the Pejac print was overpriced at release and represented poor value for money, it would not have sold out the way it did. 

For what it's worth, I happen to think both releases are somewhat disappointing. The CV (or lack of) of the artist has no bearing on that for me, I'm not entirely sure what point you were trying to make. 

Aside from this being an aesthetic nightmare, I've just never understood the allure of a ink jet print of a picture of an outside work. At least this is by the actual artist, or he at least approved it, unlike Martha Cooper dropping a print of her photo of the Banksy BOTI piece which I think is as bad as it can get. How this can be even mentioned in the same ballpark as Pejac is beyond me.

One of them has shown in galleries across the world, published multiple books, created movies, documentaries, a ballet etc, all featuring his unique style.

The other is a nameless (yes yes i know banksy blah blah pejac is not banksy) painter who's main selling point is how clever his paintings are.

You're right, they couldn't be further apart.

Side note: This place is hilarious. If you don't like a print, you complain about how it was printed? The technique is not the art. That's really that difficult a concept to grasp. For some artists i.e. faile, the technique (especially back in the day) was as much a part of the art as the actual image. JR's work exists out in the real world because the works relate directly to those places, and his prints are documented examples of those works. And by the way, JR is a photographer. So that photograph is the art as much as the wheat paste in it. Or should we all start complaining that Annie Leibovitz and David LaChapelle aren't doing silkscreened editions?

JR's work is great; the pricing of this print isn't far off at all from his other releases. Y'all need to relax.

You're putting words in my mouth, and then arguing against them.

1) I'm not defending this particular piece. In fact, earlier in this thread I said that I agreed with another commenter who said this release is disappointing.

2) I disagree with your opinion that his work doesn't translate, and in fact, some of his works like Migrants Walking can really only be appreciated when you see the photo. JR himself said "In a few hours during the night, JR and his team pasted Elmar, 20 years old who came from Azerbaijan, on the floor of Flat Iron Plaza in New York City. The image was 150 feet high. People walked on him all day, but no one really noticed him."

In fact, the majority of JR's work have been placed in areas where most people who know who he is will never actually see them in person (Kenya, Sierra Leone, Liberia etc.) He's been dong it for 17+ years - the lack of ability to appreciate the street pieces in person doesn't seem to have affected his career at all. Again i say, his photography is an integral part of the art.
