Do Banksy's prints feel dated now?, by nobokov on Aug 7, 2017 16:26:59 GMT 1, I feel as though a lot of them speak to an earlier time and if I could afford one, there are relatively few that I'd put on my walls. Does anyone agree?

LIITA is also timely, think Russia. NOLA still stands as evidence that the Feds let the people of Louisiana down. Etc, etc, etc...so what's your point? To continue to bash B?

I'd be far more concerned with him turning into some BONO of U2 type character with illusions of his own grandeur than his work having a dated subject matter.

Do Banksy's prints feel dated now?, by touchdowntodd on Aug 7, 2017 17:14:59 GMT 1, The only one I own is morons .. very relevant (cough Harland Miller cough) ..
But I think 90% of them stood up over time. Perhaps more if I consider that 10% for me are mostly the Brit based location or brand pieces. I couldn't ever relate to them being from the states
There's atleast 5 more I'd love to have on my walls, and none id turn down
More timeless than most recent artists imo, especially considering the government and society aren't improving any century soon lol

The weaker images have gained in popularity as many people have been priced out of the quality images in his catalogue and those are the type of images I never saw much appeal for, even when they were much cheaper. For those buying at market prices today, I wonder if they're enjoyed as art on the walls or languish in storage as investment vehicles?
For those who have the prints on their walls who got in early and affordable, do they still give you enjoyment? I feel like I'd initially think they were clever ideas and chuckle at the irony, but then like an old joke you've heard repeatedly, I wouldn't feel the same initial joy. I hang art, but I'm finding that I move past them pretty quickly....

For someone who is not arsed about Banksys prints, even less arsed about any of his recent projects why do you show much interest in his identity or taking issues with those who like what he does ?

I have bought at latter day prices and earlyish prices and all are framed and hung and still enjoy as much as anything else on my walls.

To me that was a clever reworking of the old banksy.

Do Banksy's prints feel dated now?, by mose on Aug 7, 2017 19:30:13 GMT 1, This is a very valid question, both for now and the mid and long range futures. Definitely worthy of consideration as opposed to outright dismissal.
I alluded to something similar in the recent KLF thread. The KLF are amazing, music/politics/imagery, etc. They have also been gone for multiple generations. Will millenials and future generations even think of them? And would that thought be any more than, 'wow, that's thes**t my parents used to listen to?!?!?'
Will a generation removed consider Banksy anything more than a novelty of times past? Will the humor translate when many of the elements of context are diminished? Price aside, are we already experiencing slippage of the message?
With regards to market, in thirty years, are 45-year-old empty-nest well-to-do gentlemen going to be buying Banksy prints/originals with their disposable income, when they didn't experience the rise of Banksy first-hand, never experienced the print queues and excitement, never had the community experience of the early forums? Already, articles left-and-right indicate that the millenial generation is less in to buying things and more in to experiences. That doesn't bode well, does it?
I don't pretend to know. It's just fun to think ponder when on the toilet, waiting for the squat rack to open up at the gym, etc. Part of me just really wonders if Banksy, and Fairey as well, are going to be lava lamps, Norman Rockwell, or Warholian.

Do Banksy's prints feel dated now?, by snipt on Aug 7, 2017 20:27:15 GMT 1, Most of the topics that Banksy has addressed, are fairly timeless. As noted earlier, Morons will always have a place on a wall as long as fine art exists. Nola, Girl With Balloon, Flower Bomber, Toxic Mary...All of these draw from current and likely future issues that many can agree with.
One thing Banksy has done well, is to stay away from topical issues. While he references current events, he doesn't do so in a way that people will forget what he's drawn from. He paints using a broad stroke.
