Banksy โข Sale Ends Today, by graeme501 on Apr 15, 2009 12:55:51 GMT 1, a different slant on it, nick walker usually gets a hard time on here regarding auction sales, and he constantly sells higher than most people on here think it should be worth, so maybe this will be the same
no offense meant to anyone on here, but the auction house have set it at this price not at a guess, but what they believe its worth in their opinion and with regards to past auction success, and i would imagine they are the experts, not the banksy forum

So you dont think they would ever mark an estimate high, to attract higher bids? I do.

If you believe everything that an 'expert' says more fool you, no offense but was it experts advice that made you buy the Neate piece you have ??

Banksy โข Sale Ends Today, by hlarmy on Apr 15, 2009 13:23:48 GMT 1, Nick historically has done well in New York Auctions - plus he does have a few high end art collectors, Jose Mugrabi being one of them.
... but are such 'high end art collectors' going to be interested in such a piece? I very much doubt it

and if you discount everything they have to say because you think you know better, then the same back at you, like alsbabar says, nick walker has some high end collectors, look at the prices of his canvases at the brp shows, and they have all sold - hardly any of the upper end stuff comes for sale in the secondary market
was it your 'expert' that told you to enquire about the neate as soon as i offered it for sale? "thats tasty" - your words, not mine

Banksy โข Sale Ends Today, by hlarmy on Apr 15, 2009 13:54:36 GMT 1, ... but are such 'high end art collectors' going to be interested in such a piece? I very much doubt it as you know art is subjective, so lets see how he gets on, if it sells - then he has a wider audience beyond urban art, if it doesnt, it can be said its because the piece wasnt good enough.
I concur but do think there are limits to subjectivity. Let's watch this space.

That's funny. I have the utmost respect for the Mugrabi family as both collectors, first and foremost, and art-world businessmen.

All sold ?? I guarantee there's some market manipulation going on there, even the Banksy camp probably has some old 'Sold out' pieces sitting gathering dust somewhere....don't believe the hype !!
as for your Neate, yes its a beauty ...but I feel someone took advantage of you in what they got you to pay for it.

Banksy โข Sale Ends Today, by cashman on Apr 15, 2009 14:21:43 GMT 1, i am saying, Nick does have a wider appeal, believe it or not, beyond this forum and urban art. If it doesnt sell it wont be because he doesnt have a following, it would be more than likely because of the piece itself, which would have put potential bidders off - hope that clears things up for you.
cheers mate

What? If it sells? Does that mean the fine folks of this forum and their urban / hipster collector comrades aren't allowed to bid at Sothebys?
Whether Mugrabi collects him or not he's still got a very long way to go to prove himself in the art world.

They have a napalm approach to collecting. You throw enough poo around, some of it's bound to get stuck to the wall

I agree Nick's work has done well at auction in resent times compared to others (well the one that reached the reserve ), but this is not his best work, i still feel it could sell at least a the lower end of the est, even tho most pepole seem to be skint at the moment, can't think why? I guess only time will tell,if it dose not sell the work was weak, if it sells then i know what I'm talking about and you better take note ;D

Robert Hughes ridiculed him and he didn't come accross too well, you can never tell with the media though, they show oyu what they want to show you!

Banksy โข Sale Ends Today, by mike hunt on Apr 16, 2009 13:13:55 GMT 1, The auction world is a weird one. If there's no funny business then the auction house will put it up for what they think they can sell it for, which is in their interest and the seller's interest. If there's something fishy going on, which isn't unusual, then who knows what its really worth. I've given up trying to guess what todays artists are worth. Its easier to predict print prices by Basquiat etc, which are much more stable

Banksy โข Sale Ends Today, by snausages on Apr 17, 2009 5:18:34 GMT 1, im surprised that so many people like the red cross banksy painting, for me, it seems too obvious but sale ends isnt ? Do you think Sale Ends was an obvious choice for subject matter? I think only Banksy would come up with it. The Red Cross painting, aside from the youtube video someone posted it also reminds me of that stage in Disney world where they make a joke about the moon landing being staged and have the astronauts reading from teleprompters. And I've seen this joke in other incarnations too. Not really trying to diss on Banksy I think he did a fine job with the painting, but it's a little less original and too illustrated.
But I am looking forward to seeing Sale Ends and a lot of other work in person.
