Compare these sculptures my Ai Weiwei in an edition of 1000 at $675 to the Jeff Koons Balloon Dog releases at $9000 in editions of 2300. Koons has released them in at least 5 colours. The Ai Weiwei make a lot more sense to me, so long as they don't start releasing these in different colourways but I would think Ai Weiwei isn't that lazy and would release something else. mocastore.org/collections/prints-and-posters

He created these for the Pubic Art Fund, money goes to charity, he has created the NYC show with them as supporters and he is giving back to them with these items, maybe raising $500,000 after manufacturing and shipping which was free (!) in US. I agree with you as to rarity, and he obviously comes from an entirely different mindset than Jeff Koons.
Can you imagine Jeff Koons being in jail for 5 years? Not that some don't think he's committed crimes against Art!

I must have been one of the first to cart at 16.48 pm UK time - then I saw the shipping fee, hesitated, emptied my cart, and thought about it for an hour, before finally going back and buying one. 500+ had sold at that stage. Well I'm just happy I got one. I actually like that print, really meaningful.

Well I'm just happy I got one. I actually like that print, really meaningful. Absolutely - I'm really pleased and amazed to have got one. It's a fine print, a fine cause and a fine gesture by an artist I respect and who I never expected to own anything by. He currently has a sculpture edition on sale at the RA for ยฃ14,000 so to be able to pick up an official edition for ยฃ100 is incredible. It would just be the icing on the cake to open it and find a signature in the corner. |
