Martin Creed ๐ฌ๐ง Turner Prize Winner, by avec art on Dec 22, 2018 12:25:02 GMT 1, I mentioned collective histories, as many atrocities of colonialism and later the slave trade were carried out with the use of pseudo scientific methods of human classification, this in itself was an extension of a particular method of classification so closely adopted. Much of the wealth in the West was achieved through exploitation and at the expense of other cultures (perhaps still so). Manual labour was outsourced to people considered inferior and enshrined in law by the establishment of the time. It can be argued that the structures in place which allowed such events to happen are still the same structures albeit with a different veneer.
I'm proposing the hypothesis that art can be a powerful tool, and has always been used as such, and that the art establishment today, the turner prize people et all, are patsy or party to those same age old political power structures and as such like to choose art which represents the values they cling to. Claiming them to be radical and challenging boundaries, when in fact just singing off the same old hymn sheet, and simply reinforcing the status quo.
Perhaps I'm raising a number of issues here which go well beyond the questioning of a single artist. If you read what I've said I've not criticised him once (and I know art critique often doesn't go down well here) but questioned the reason why he was adopted and put on a pedestal by those who can choose whose voice is heard and whose is not.

Martin Creed ๐ฌ๐ง Turner Prize Winner, by Gentle Mental on Dec 22, 2018 17:35:14 GMT 1, Ah yes the west was terrible. But bits were ok. Things were invented lives were saved wars slavery exploitation medicine and tech. Money money money zen. Whatever. As it is with all civilisations.
There is no emperorโs new clothes to call out. Some people just like to see stupid kings naked.
Lights turning on and off is an amazing piece of art. In so many ways. Even the news of it winning is fascinating and pleasurable.

Martin Creed ๐ฌ๐ง Turner Prize Winner, by avec art on Dec 22, 2018 18:01:24 GMT 1, I also like work no.227 from the year he won the Turner prize. But it doesn't hurt me to question the meaning behind an artists body of work, and who it actually is who has decided to support them and why. After all isn't that what much of what he does ... inviting the viewer to question their experience.
edit: plus I never said or implied the Emperor wears no clothes, they're very fine clothes indeed. I was questioning who put the crown on his head.

Martin Creed ๐ฌ๐ง Turner Prize Winner, by robo on Dec 22, 2018 23:28:34 GMT 1, I loved this piece as soon as I saw it so was a no brainer (and glad I got it in time). But then Iโve always been a fan of drum machines. It links smartly to the themes in lots of his other pieces including primary palettes, repetition and variation, metronomy, simplicity in creation, sequences, etc.
I do also really like the broccoli print.
I donโt think heโs insulting his audience at all with these works. I think heโs exploring what the creative act is and what an artwork can be, and finding beauty in unusual places. Heโs sometimes an algorthmical artist like Sol Lewitt.
I am curious to see the print now. How different are they? Perhaps there are random colour variations. And how big is it - I guess 7โ but listing doesnโt say.

It's bloody well broccoli prints.... what the f@*k for ยฃ1500...........I seriously wonder sometimes where I went wrong with not pursuing my potato prints they had me do at school back in the 60's. Holy shit that makes me sound old........

Not to mention his singing elevator at the Southbank Centre and the singing steps in Edinburgh - has anyone visited those?
