60 Seconds withโฆ Banksy
by Rachel Corcoran Published December 14, 2017
Why did you want to put on a nativity? And in the car park of your Walled Off Hotel?
My hotel is less than a mile from the manger where Jesus was born, so I felt obliged to get into the Christmas spirit. I wanted to reach out to the neighbourhood and bring everyone together for a party, so I announced plans for a nativity play starring kids from the local refugee camp. It turns out most of them are Muslim.
Youโre filming it. What were the biggest challenges?
The TV programme shows normal people living in a very un-normal situation. Usually, the only time you see Palestinian children on TV is when theyโre being pulled from a pile of rubble. The film has been shot over the past few weeks and edited in days. Sometimes a huge task and a tight deadline can bring out the best in people. This time not so much.
What sort of reaction have you had from the locals?
The wall [built by Israel through the West Bank] dominates the area. It snakes for hundreds of miles right across the landscape. Although it turns out most of the local children didnโt know it existed. They live right near it, some only a couple of streets away, but their parents had kept it from them in an effort to preserve their innocence. Iโd been making plans for an ironic, modern play about their situation but when the kids arrived at the wall they said: โWhat the hell is that?โ
Collaborator: Danny Boyle PIC: REX
How easy was it to find people who wanted to be involved?
Itโs hard to attract young Israelis because their government tells them if they cross the wall theyโll be killed. But many do visit, quietly. And theyโre very welcome. And on the plus side we got a delightful lighting effect from the army sweeping the crowd with their searchlight.
Danny Boyle is directing it. Why did you choose him?
I just remembered Danny made Britain look cool at the Olympics, so I figured he can do pretty much anything. I was staggered when he mailed back and agreed to do it. I never met him and Iโm not sure heโd speak to me now if I did. I slightly oversold the gig. I think I used words like โprime locationโ and โnatural amphitheatreโ, whereas in reality it was unmistakably a patch of waste ground surrounded by graffiti under an army watchtower.
What was he like to work with?
Brilliant. Heโs clever, thoughtful, laughs a lot. We had a few artistic disagreements. Danny is very community-minded, diplomatic and sensitive to peopleโs views, whereas Iโm a w***er.
How did your hotel come about?
Bethlehem is famous for not having enough rooms โ it seemed the obvious place to start a hotel chain.
Bethlehem: Banksyโs graffiti
How do you feel about the wall?
I think itโs one of the great man-made injustices of our time. That wall is a weapon. It declares an โusโ and a โthemโ. It defines you as being on the inside or the out. It crassly simplifies an enormously complex situation into black and white. And normally thatโs my job.
What are the biggest misconceptions about Palestine?
The political situation in Israel and Palestine is a mess but itโs important to remember we helped create it. I liked something Salman Rushdie said recently: โThe British donโt understand much about their history โ because so much of it happened abroad.โ
How did you feel about Trump recognising Jerusalem as the capital of Israel?
Thatโs going to create a lot of problems. As a hotelier in the Arab world, the last words you want to hear are โtheyโve called for another uprisingโ. Iโm starting to think Torquay would have been easier. Although thereโs absolutely no guarantee Trump wonโt be starting a war there next.
How challenging is it to maintain your anonymity?
It feels like weโre living at a time when the supporting characters are being asked to play the lead. The last thing we need is the guy who paints the scenery coming out and taking centre stage.
The recent picture doing the rounds of a street artist at work in Bethlehem โ is that you?!
I havenโt seen the photo but I can categorically tell you itโs not me. Especially if it is.
Alternativity is on BBC2, 9pm, Sunday

Banksy, The Alternativity @ Walled Off Hotel, by chablis on Dec 17, 2017 21:26:57 GMT 1,
Tonight in half an hour here in the UK.
Coming to TV screens on Sunday 17 December, 9pm, is The Alternativity, a unique observational arts and documentary commission for BBC Two. This hour-long film sees creative visionary Danny Boyle travel to Bethlehem to capture a festive performance of the nativity quite unlike any other. In March this year, graffiti artist Banksy opened The Walled Off Hotel in the little town of Bethlehem - a place under Israeli occupation, overlooked by a vast security wall and with checkpoints controlling the roads in and out.
Now, in a bid to bring some festive cheer to what Banksy calls โthe least Christmassy place on earthโ, the artist has decided to stage an Alternativity in the carpark of his hotel around the corner from Manger Square, Bethlehem - believed to be the birthplace of Christ himself. But as a famously anonymous graffiti artist who has never put on a play, he is going to need some help - and who better than celebrated Oscar-winning film director and maestro behind the London 2012 Olympic opening ceremony, Danny Boyle?
Accepting this unorthodox request from a man he has never met, Danny admits the closest he has ever been to the Middle East is a fortnight in Majorca. Thrown in at the deep end, he travels to the occupied Palestinian territories to create a spectacular show from scratch.
Shot over six weeks, this enthralling documentary follows the action as Danny overcomes the many restrictions to assemble a cast and crew, meeting local children, theatrical performers and a great many donkeys along the way.
How will Danny tell the story of the most famous journey ever made - in a land where movement is severely restricted? Will he find a donkey? And, as if the challenge wasnโt big enough already, can he fulfil Banksyโs request to make it snow?
Patrick Holland, Controller BBC Two, says: โIt is brilliant for BBC Two to be working with Danny Boyle, Banksy and the creative team who together are making this alternative nativity. It promises to be a challenging and provocative exploration of a story of that speaks to young and old alike.โ
The Alternativity (1x60โ) is an Acme Films production for BBC Two. The Executive Producers are Jaimie DโCruz and Simon Ford, it is produced and directed by Martin Webb and Lauren Jacobs. Danny Horan is the BBC Commissioning Editor, Documentaries and Mark Bell, BBC Head of Arts Commissioning.
Artwork/copyright Banksy, (please credit BBC/Banksy).
And a shameless quick copy an paste, as a heads up.
