New KAWS print from Pace, by CREAM on Dec 5, 2017 3:49:23 GMT 1, That would be pretty disappointing if they are just circles inside a white square paper. Full bleed works best with his prints imo the white space in the last few takes away from the image.

New KAWS print from Pace, by Pattycakes on Dec 5, 2017 8:23:43 GMT 1, Tondos are very, very hard to frame, I've been tying to find low cost options for years. One way is to have circular UV acrylic cut, it's the cheapest way. If you want an actual frame that's where it gets expensive. I've heard there is a source in Japan that does ones to fit the Murakami tondo offsets but I've never been able to get the details. The last quote I had for one was well over a grand.

New KAWS print from Pace, by daveart on Dec 5, 2017 15:16:57 GMT 1, so, on the framing - would it be totally stupid to put a circle inside of a square frame ? 9 circular frames sounds like a really big bill at the framers - if they even wanted to take it on.

I think it would look fine, as long as the matte and frame were both white. Should give the same impression.

New KAWS print from Pace, by Howard Johnson on Dec 6, 2017 0:45:33 GMT 1, Normally a kaws pace release would have me in the ol cycle of disappointment in not being able afford kaws anymore, but the open edition toys have really changed my outlook. If your young and broke you can still save up for a companion statute. If your silly rich you can buy pace prints. Everyone's happy.
On to the editions. Round prints are kinda cool, but I feel like they are a little too similar to Murakami. As everyone is referring to them as "tondo" or whatever I assume there's a history of prints like this, and is not unique to the well known murakami lithos. While I always applaud any artist willing to try something different like this (even if it's a failure, ingenuity in printmaking is absolutely necessary) I can't help but feel like it was a missed opportunity.
The only kaws show I've been fortunate enough to attend was in LA a couple years ago, and I feel in love with the shapes of the artwork moreso then the imagery within it. Canvas shaped like Felix, peanuts characters, animals, wierd cartoon shapes that you recognize but can't quite pinpoint. I found it fascinating that by simply changing the shape of the work, the whole piece is elevated. (Pic below)
Now I know some crazy shapes would be near impossible to produce as prints, but why not try for something simple like chum or a ambiguous cartoon head. Sell them framed so collectors don't have to fret, and raise the edition size and price to cover the additional costs. Maybe it couldn't be done, but I'd love to see them try.
While we're on the topic; who else is over screenprints as the go to medium for contemporary artists? Give me embossings, give me stone lithos, give me c-prints, give me transfers, give me a combo of these with a sweet silkscreen layer. There are soooo many wonderful and underutilized print techniques, that I really don't know why the silkscreen had become so pervasive (Warhol?).
Cheers to shep for mixing it up with his hpms, os gemeos for using classic lithography, Koons for incorporating mirrors into his recent edition, retna for his monotypes, richter for his precise and exquisite mixed media editions, and faile for pushing the silkscreen medium to its extremes. I'm probably missing other good examples, but I feel like I've seen thousands of silkscreen prints, and while they will always be my first true love, I feel like we deserve a little experimentation in future releases.
