Is it time for Banksy to ride off in the sunset?, by Rouen Cathedral on Dec 6, 2017 16:26:00 GMT 1, I’m sure I’ll get the ‘questions questions questions’ mocking but for some discussion:
Should Banksy so to say - ride off into the sunset. Couple ideas to discuss:
- I think it can be argued he really isn’t an artist anymore. Very few ‘art pieces’ made and mainly focused on charged political/economical etc topics. More an advocate/ activist then an artist. Maybe it’s time to separate from the ‘art world’.
- if it’s activism that’s of interest surely he has the means to do some real good. Think Walled Off but less focus on the ‘artist behind it’ and more in the subject. Whether the Walled Off is brining needed attention to the area isn’t debateable. But neither is the fact that Banksys involvement is distracting - ie see box set discussion.
- He started off painting the streets, against the art world, moved into the print realmn and participating in the world. Created some great art along the way that was visually nice with some great conceptual and throughy provoking images. That he got huge and became more unobtainable and whether he liked it or not an established player in the art world. He’s then hit the streets again (BOTI), then turned into a large forms of commentary on major issues (dismaland - Walled Off). What is left to do as an artist for Banksy? The great continue to reinvent themselves. How can Banksy? Is it coming to an end? Should it? Maybe it should and that would be the greatest chapter of it all...
Now the big book reveal is a wild card for sure. But maybe just another reason to fade into the greatness of history and pivot to something else.

His early work? A lot.
I would say his political phase was later in his ‘career’. My question is wondering if he can really just continue doing politically charged work for the rest of his career? To me that would make the art if it fade more and more as it appears to be doing some already.

Is it time for Banksy to ride off in the sunset?, by Carl Cashman on Dec 6, 2017 16:48:58 GMT 1, Im not sure its faded, projects will probably get bigger and less frequent as they they take far more effort. Also if politics in art isnt your thing, youve probably picked the wrong scene to begin with

I guess the question becomes. Is he really an artist then? Wheres the line? Sure the two can be merged but at some point I think the ‘art’ distracts from the case. That’s why the Walled Off is so grey to me.
I disagree with the statement about the scene being politics heavy. Sure a lot of artist have works dealing with topics but they also have a lot of other works not dealing with it. Are there any artists in the scene that stick to just politics?

Literally every artist on here would have made political art at some point

Sure.
But what’s the last non political banksy Work? Does it date back to BOTI.
Do you think as an ‘artist’ one could just do political works there whole career?

Is it time for Banksy to ride off in the sunset?, by Deleted on Dec 6, 2017 17:58:26 GMT 1, Hasn't politics had more to do with art very late on in the whole history of art. As art has evolved haven't artists chosen too or been free too make political statements with their art, maybe as art has also been opened up to a great audience through the increase in disposable income. I don't understand why an artist or artists can't solely choose to do political art, we are not surely trying to compare it to the type of art the great painters of the past chose to do?

Yes and many have. Take away political art and most museums will be half empty.

I guess my question is not whether an artist can do it. The question is can banksy now only do it.
Can arguably the greatest artist of the 21st century now only reveal ‘art’ thats fully political? I don’t know. If the work strays more towards activism and charity I think it’s worth questioning whether It’s art is very valid.

What's important is that he has the ability and choice to do it because of what ever 'art' he has created in his career so far.

Right. So if the art isn’t included and is really not important then why discuss it as art. It’s takes away from the cause no?

Whether everything he does is art is not really needed on this forum, it doesn't matter to me anyway. He is Banksy and the reason we have this forum and are having this discussion.

Is it time for Banksy to ride off in the sunset?, by Deleted on Dec 6, 2017 20:39:51 GMT 1, "I think it can be argued he really isn’t an artist anymore"
Of course Banksy is an artist, it's completely and utterly ridiculous to suggest otherwise!
I've just come back from the West Bank, and I was surrounded by Banksy's art 24/7. Old art (put up on walls around town 10 years ago) and new art (put up on the separation wall and around town just a few days ago). Then there is the hotel, which is a 3D immersive Banksy art installation, like living in a corrupted oil. As well as all that there was The Alternativity, which was a collaboration between Banksy, Danny Boyle and Reham Isaac. I could go on...
Your premise is utterly pointless and just plain wrong.

I appreciate the sharing of info.
I ask this question.
What’s the most important part of the Walled Off?
Is it the artwork? Is it helping the local community? Is it bringing awareness to the area? Is it the genius concept by an artist?

This is dangerous in a pure appreciation of art though no?
So political art is more significant then non political art?
What about political art for side A of a controversy vs Side B? Since I agree with Side A does that make that art more significant? I disagree with Side B so it’s less significant?

Yeah I think they all play a roll. But to say it’s equal. I just think that degrades the importance of the situation.
Banksy the artist is equal to 100s of years of war and terror?
Surely no one believes that right?
