Hewlett is Hewlett, 3d is del naja, Banksy is Gunningham, I am spartacus. Hewlett didnt start POW - Laz, Stevie P and Banksy started it, Hewlett was the front. That is not a theory that is a fact!! He was a fairly silent "front"... or was he was more involved in the early events? And seemed to be the only shareholder, until very recently... the others ran it but I assumed it was his thing (not sure if that was from the very start though?)

Is Banksy Jamie Hewlett?, by jimbofatz on Apr 12, 2018 16:55:48 GMT 1, The history of Pictures on Walls
The Greeks and Romans made paintings on wooden panels. I'm assuming that some of these were hung on walls. The earliest discovered are the Pitsa Panels, from circa 540 BCE.
The earliest known Chinese painted banners date from the Han dynasty in 2nd century BCE, and were hung on walls.

Is Banksy Jamie Hewlett?, by Rouen Cathedral on Apr 12, 2018 21:56:30 GMT 1, I disagree. There is a huge difference between early banksy and late banksy. It's not just a medium thing. So, his work has progressed, stencils and style improved. You can clearly see the progression in his work. And nothing like Hewlett in any way. The idea that Hewlett popped to Bristol to start a street art campaign, totally different to all his other work, at that time, is laughable when you think about it.
Maybe but I do think it could be argued his work hasn't progressed, stencils and style improved.
I prefer early banksy. I think others do as well.

Is Banksy Jamie Hewlett?, by willamsa on Apr 12, 2018 22:43:05 GMT 1, He works in different media, and obviously sketches look different to paintings, and stencils are different again, and sculptures are collaborations, but they still all have a similar style. None of which look anything like Jamie Hewlett's style. I disagree. There is a huge difference between early banksy and late banksy. It's not just a medium thing. What ? so Banksy isn't Banksy ?

But my point is similar to early Jasper John's is different then late Jasper John's.

Is Banksy Jamie Hewlett?, by Deleted on Apr 13, 2018 9:58:14 GMT 1, Next we'll be going through the complete artist roster of Deadline magazine for BANKSY. Perhaps Tankgirl is BANKSY. Perhaps Bambi is Tankgirl. Personally I still reckon BANKSY is Elvis. I'll be honest. Back in the 90s there were wheels like this rattling around Stokes croft in Brissle. Perhaps BANKSY is one of the North Somerset hedge-monkey convoy crew... just saying like... Perhaps Guy Denning is Banksy and trying to put us off the scent?

That banksy doesn't have one style. Which is fine cause other artists don't either. But that means using the srugment that his work is not the same style as someone people claim him to he doesn't work.
There is a difference though. We know Jasper John's was one person. We don't with banksy.

Why ask a question if you don't want an answer.

What circle? I'm pretty clear with my position.
Early banksy style is very different then late banksy style. That's similar to other artists yet in other artist cases we have confirmation of their identity. Thus saying babksys style is different then 'accused banksy artist' as evidence they aren't banksy is an argument that doesn't make sense. Saying banksy has one style is wrong.
That's not a circle that's a point that no one can refute.

No. Banksy is more likely to be several artists running several different styles. So more than one artist is doing their own style as well as their "Banksy" style? And that's more likely than 1 artist just being Banksy and able to do several styles?
(Although I'd love for you to demonstrate these "different styles" that have to be done by different people, and not just collaborations instigated by 1 man, or evolution over 15 or so years)

So wait you agree banksy has multiple styles? Weren't you originally implying otherwise since Hewitt didn't have banksy style?
To answer your question there is no 'banksy style'. Do you disagree with that?

(Except the obvious collaborations in media 1 man can't do himself)
2. There is clearly a single Banksy style that's easily recognisable... Just look through threads on this forum with "Is this Banksy?" in the title. There's very few times, if ever, anyone has passed a new street stencil off as Banksy without it being quickly dismissed as a fake or bad copy (with the exception of crafty ones using something Banksy has already done. Like a rat, etc).

Those are a similar style? I guess they both have black and are both by 'banksy'.
In response to the passing off as banksy and it not working. I'd respond with we've seen banksy works assumed not banksy until posted on his Instagram. (most recent NYC pieces showed this)
The only single banksy style that is recognizable is when it's signed and confirmed by banksy.
Honestly it's quite impressive. He could post any piece of work on his Instagram whether it be by someone else, a toilet, or a piece of trash and people would say it was a example of his style.

It's a pointless argument but plenty of artists have experimented with different styles, while still being clearly made by the same hand. That stencil is an early and unusual one, that doesn't fit his usual style. I'll grant you that. But there's a progression from those early stencils, to rude copper, to bomb hugger, to images used in those drippy paintings, to Blur's Think Tank art, to No Ball Games, etc The figures in them have a very similar look, despite the difference in execution.
Still none of any of these look like the work of Jamie Hewlett. Nothing close.

Is Banksy Jamie Hewlett?, by chainsaw on Apr 13, 2018 19:01:31 GMT 1, Hewlett didnt start POW - Laz, Stevie P and Banksy started it, Hewlett was the front. That is not a theory that is a fact!! He was a fairly silent "front"... or was he was more involved in the early events? And seemed to be the only shareholder, until very recently... the others ran it but I assumed it was his thing (not sure if that was from the very start though?) Hewlett was a majority shareholder for a long time, but others held shares which were purchased back by the company. Directors have come and gone.
Most shares were £1, someone (or plural) paid £40k in to buy 10 shares and kickstart the business.(iirc)
The company is cash rich, there appears to have been little cash distributed while it has been up and running.
I doubt Banksy would have put his name down as a visible shareholder of the company if he wanted to be anonymous. So its an interesting theory, but I highly doubt its right.
Hewlett didnt start POW - Laz, Stevie P and Banksy started it, Hewlett was the front. That is not a theory that is a fact!! He was a fairly silent "front"... or was he was more involved in the early events? And seemed to be the only shareholder, until very recently... the others ran it but I assumed it was his thing (not sure if that was from the very start though?) Hewlett was a majority shareholder for a long time, but others held shares which were purchased back by the company. Directors have come and gone. Most shares were £1, someone (or plural) paid £40k in to buy 10 shares and kickstart the business.(iirc) The company is cash rich, there appears to have been little cash distributed while it has been up and running.
