"This is America" - Childish Gambino, by Happy Shopper on May 8, 2018 11:56:30 GMT 1, Great song and video. Good to see artists critical of the system, but also of violence in general. There's a disturbing trend in UK rap to glorify violence (even on songs I've heard played on Radio 1!).
Maybe I'm getting old!!

There are a lot of positive messages in Hip Hop, but for whatever the reason the powers that be don't promote these records. Mostly these artists don't own the radio stations and labels that promote violence in these communities. IMHO

"This is America" - Childish Gambino, by nex on May 13, 2018 23:53:42 GMT 1, It’s reassuring to see in this day and age that a multi layered message can still be celebrated far and wide, pushing home important messages that otherwise would be pushed aside for the next short term fix of consumerist bs.

What is the message? That there is too much gun violence in America. Yes we know but we are way past that. It has reached an embarrassingly high amount of our own people being killed by our own people, young and old. The sad thing is...... there is no way to stop it. We are lost and it is but one problem and we are not alone.

"This is America" - Childish Gambino, by hui on May 14, 2018 0:53:10 GMT 1, I love Childish Gambino. First heard of him through Bonfire and Heartbreak. That said, how is this song any different than any of the other hundreds of political related songs, especially in Hip Hop? Not only do we live in a 24 hours new cycle, but we we're also apways connected, e.g. social media, YouTube, internet in general. This message is nothing new. You cant view a screen without being shown one of the scenarios in this music video. What's the statement? I mean for fuck sakes, an elementary school was the scene of a mass murder. I wish people, particularly Americans who enjoy this video somehow translated that enjoyment in civic engagement. We had a primary election recently - our overall voting numbers were pretty low. What else is new?

"This is America" - Childish Gambino, by hui on May 14, 2018 1:06:12 GMT 1, So, I'm reading some of these articles and I feel like they just changed the name of Kendrick Lamar to Childish Gambino. And Eminem was bring back his music from the Bush era and tailoring to Trump, so there's been a few articles bout that.
I'm still confused. What recent developments are we discussing?

It's never going to stop, it's been going on forever and too many politicians are in bed with the NRA. Additionally, you could take away all the guns one day and there would be more on the streets the next day. They are being made in part or in whole in small machine shops all around the country and in peoples garages. Did you see the newest version of the gun that looks like a cell phone so you can conceal it in your back pocket? Pretty soon people aren't even going to care about the laws they're gonna have burner guns that look like cell phones with no way to trace them. how you gonna stop that?

Pretty soon people aren't even going to care about the laws they're gonna have burner guns that look like cell phones with no way to trace them. how you gonna stop that? Seems to work pretty well in Australia by comparison.
Since Australia’s gun ban gun violence in general declined over the following two decades to a nearly unimaginable degree. In 2014, the latest year for which final statistics are available, Australia’s murder rate fell to less than 1 killing per 100,000 people—a murder rate one-fifth the size of America’s.
Just 32 of those homicides—in a nation of 24 MILLION PEOPLE—were committed with guns. By comparison, more than 500 people were shot dead last year in the city of Chicago alone. (Chicago has about 2.7 million residents.)
Perhaps most remarkable is what happened with gun suicides in Australia in the wake of the post-Port Arthur firearm legislation. They dropped by some 80 percent...
Hard to say less guns means less gun deaths. Will they all go away? No. Of course not. Will less people die by forearms? YES. 100%

We're seeing a rise in racial intolerance when we should be going the other direction.
It's a powerful video. Don't even need to the lyrics. Have there been better, political songs? Absolutely.

I love that Kate tempest track.
The message is manifold in the childish piece, both visually and musically....
- guns held in higher esteem than life - black men being stereotyped in US culture - historical racism in the US history - everything being recorded/viewed through mobile tech - the next craze taking our eyes off the larger ‘context’ - black men trapped in their current day stereotypes - through the pacing and lyrics and styles in the song a lot of these messages are conveyed, as they are in the images and acting and the dancing
It’s magnificently well thought out

"This is America" - Childish Gambino, by eskay on May 14, 2018 10:10:44 GMT 1, Did anyone actually understand a word he raps? Not like, to critique the song, I just don't know wtf he's saying. That's kind of the point, the lyrics are intentionally bad in parts - this is in reference to the new wave of mumble rappers and their penchant for always talking "Gucci this", "100 bags that" etc.
The video is layered in so many different ways - stabs at society, racism, elitism, ignorance etc.......

Interestingly enough Chicago has among the most strict gun control laws in the country. The reason it hasn’t helped is because gun violence is a symptom of a larger problem. The graduation rate is on a steady increase but it’s still only around 75%. When 1/4 of the kids in Chicago aren’t graduating what are they going to do with their lives? Sell drugs and rob to survive, and both of those promote guns. When the kids stay out of the streets and finish school, you’ll see the violence go down.
Australia doesn’t share those social issues so it would make sense when guns were confiscated it was ‘successful’. Most of the guns turned in didn’t belong to criminals who resorted to using them daily. The overall homicide and suicide rate has remained consistent despite the ban as well . Which just goes to show if someone’s motivated to hurting themselves or others, they’ll find a way. I don’t know why changing the cause of death is considered a win.
It's never going to stop, it's been going on forever and too many politicians are in bed with the NRA. Additionally, you could take away all the guns one day and there would be more on the streets the next day. (Chicago has about 2.7 million residents.) Perhaps most remarkable is what happened with gun suicides in Australia in the wake of the post-Port Arthur firearm legislation. They dropped by some 80 percent... Hard to say less guns means less gun deaths. Will they all go away? No. Of course not. Will less people die by forearms? YES. 100% Interestingly enough Chicago has among the most strict gun control laws in the country.

"This is America" - Childish Gambino, by mose on May 14, 2018 11:56:01 GMT 1, I love Childish Gambino. I mean for f**ksakes, an elementary school was the scene of a mass murder. I wish people, particularly Americans who enjoy this video somehow translated that enjoyment in civic engagement. We had a primary election recently - our overall voting numbers were pretty low. What else is new? It's more the video than the song. Also look at America today. The Trump Presidency has brought a lot of America's checkered history to the forefront. We're seeing a rise in racial intolerance when we should be going the other direction.
The Obama presidency gave urgency to white nationalists, the Trump presidency empowers the radical left, and the pendulum continues to swing.
