Especially since I would have close to zero use for the membership if I wasnt selected in this process.

Same. The reason I didn't bother signing up. If I lived in London or go there regularly I wouldn't have cared and just signed up regardless.

It would equate to giving buyers free membership, as well as meaning they would just have to give everyone the discount, so you can understand why they wouldn't accept new members getting such a large discount.

While you have a point, if someone were to sign up, they would probably be signing up via direct debit. The likelihood of their membership running for multiple years is reasonably high. Plus someone having a membership would increase the chance of them purchasing something in the future. I guess it is the likelihood of future revenue. However for this I think it is probably more to do with them not wanting to redo invoicing.

My point was recurring payments that would take a conscious decision to cancel. But you’re right most take card.

Unless things have changed (I subscribed for a 4 people membership almost 10 year ago and I let it renew automatically since then), Tate membership is only via direct debit. But the Tate membership is worth every penny.
The best benefit: visit the exhibitions in the morning for two hours before they open to the general public. Really priceless for big crowd events.

My thoughts are that they don't want to go through the trouble of adjusting the invoice; maybe he spoke to the wrong person. Let me know if you're able to do it and i'll relay the information.

My thoughts are that they don't want to go through the trouble of adjusting the invoice; maybe he spoke to the wrong person. Let me know if you're able to do it and i'll relay the information. I sincerely hope Tate do NOT allow people to take out membership just to get the discount. This is basically cheating Tate out of 300 pounds per print, as everyone would become a member just to save 300 pounds. That is not what Tate membership is supposed to be all about. It's about supporting the arts, not about getting things on the cheap.

I totally understand where you are coming from and I agree with your reasoning to a point, especially since I'm already a member. However, that would be out of line compared to their other prints. If you go on their website and look at a product page it clearly advertises that if you add a membership to your basket that you will get a discount on that purchase. If anyone has become a member, I would really encourage them to get the most out of it and see some of the exhibitions. You can get in for free and they are well worth a visit.

Either way the Tate should have made it clear from the start, that due to demand Membership can't be applied retroactively if that is the case.
