Same. The reason I didn't bother signing up. If I lived in London or go there regularly I wouldn't have cared and just signed up regardless.

Unless things have changed (I subscribed for a 4 people membership almost 10 year ago and I let it renew automatically since then), Tate membership is only via direct debit.
But the Tate membership is worth every penny.
The best benefit: visit the exhibitions in the morning for two hours before they open to the general public. Really priceless for big crowd events.

If you go on their website and look at a product page it clearly advertises that if you add a membership to your basket that you will get a discount on that purchase. If anyone has become a member, I would really encourage them to get the most out of it and see some of the exhibitions. You can get in for free and they are well worth a visit.

Either way the Tate should have made it clear from the start, that due to demand Membership can't be applied retroactively if that is the case.
