This image works so much better with color -and still not greatest -things one could buy in same price range -no brainer pass I am not a big fan of Retna but I think it's nice to see him do something other than his usual calligraphy. I do happen to like this one and do have the funds available for it but just can't bring myself to part with the cash on an emotional level simply because of his history. I know that throughout history there have been many physical abusers of other people, mainly of women. I don't own any of their art either. Personal choice, pass. |

No deep rich darks that most etchings have that are done using similar tools (drypoint needle, acid etch and/or roulette). To me that's what I love most about etchings; the deep rich dark tones in contrast to the white/off-white paper. I love Jake and Dinos Chapman's etchings cuz they have the tonal range and similar raw/go-for-it attitude toward mark making. This, while raw and compositionally striking, I think that it could do with reworking and pushing for rich/deep dark marks. Just my 2 cents...

Agree this is not his best Brimstone image, the lack of colour and size also does not help. However, this is an image he has been producing throughout his career, releasing two prior prints through PTA with the same character.
I personally prefer his calligraphy style but him doing a Brimstone is nothing new. It just drums up more interest for his next calligraphy style print.

I accept he has done this before and I didn't like those either.... what I was trying to say was he was trying too hard - his calligraphy style also works better for me and I dont think he needs to 'drum' up further interest in that as there always seems to be plenty of people to purchase. Last time I was wandering around Skid Row in LA I was awe struck by how incredible the enormous Retna covered building is, I have no idea what the building is actually called, near Union Square Station?
* I was also horrified at how many homeless men & women with obvious mental health and addiction issues there are ......whoa! I was metal detected and had my bag searched and had to show ID just to get into a greyhound bus station in the middle of the afternoon!
