Was 2018 the year that killed Street Art collecting?, by nobokov on Dec 10, 2018 20:58:11 GMT 1, Increasing print prices, kaws commercial collaborations, flood of terrible Invader edition, rehashes by Pose, faile, and Conor Harrington, Shepard Fairey christmas ornaments, Pejac open editions. Also, activity seems to have died on this forum and EB. The whole scene feels to be on its last legs in my opinion. Anyone agree?

Was 2018 the year that killed Street Art collecting?, by Masong on Dec 10, 2018 21:05:38 GMT 1, Maybe it’s just the year that the print market died. New artist charging into the hundreds for their first release, expensive giclee’s and people buying just because it might be worth more than they paid. Street art itself will always remain prevalent and popular. I myself don’t think street art transfers to well to paper most of the time anyway

Was 2018 the year that killed Street Art collecting?, by cest on Dec 10, 2018 21:11:00 GMT 1, I'm not entirely sure what street art has to do with print prices or rehashes. In my opinion there's more street art available for people to see on a larger scale than there ever has been before.
Now we're talking about Urban Arts, I think that just opens the door for new faces.... Everybody's holding on to 2008 and the whole Banksy led scene

This place put some of them on the map and it will continue to do so with new artists.
You really can't blame them for moving on to bigger things. Yes most of us are getting priced out of the market, but they did make a few bob for some of us along the way.
There will be tons more good artists to come.
Look at the list above most of them are doing nearly the same thing for years with a tweak here and there.

Was 2018 the year that killed Street Art collecting?, by The Fool on Dec 10, 2018 21:31:32 GMT 1, not to pick holes at your post but...
- Not liking the Invader releases is more of an opinion than a "downfall of street art" - Faile, if you are talking about "rehashing" the dog image. They have released variations of the dog several times over the years. - Pose's "rehash" was all unique mashups - not sure how this is killing street art. - Kaws has been working with Uniqlo for a few years now, as early as 2015 or 2016. - EB activity has probably slowed down because the site is garbage and was down for an extended period. - Shepard has also been doing Christmas Ornaments for years, the first one came out in 2010...

Put it this way, has there been any originality coming out of those artists lately or out of the scene itself? It's all the same stuff and tons of artists drawing cartoon characters

Was 2018 the year that killed Street Art collecting?, by Deleted on Dec 10, 2018 21:35:27 GMT 1, In a short space of time I’ve found myself moving from the street art scene to more contemporary art. There’s some good street art out there but I’ve never been that convinced it translates that well away from it.
A lot of the art on here being discussed / sold is a long way from street art.. Pejac, Harland, shrigley etc.
Kaws whilst starting as street is now fully contemporary for me.
So I’m conclusion yes, yes it’s dead 😂

Without wanting get banned for the 600th time, this forum is also dead.
There is no community feel anymore. It’s oneupmanship and trivial arguments and not a lot of constructive, informed opinion.
I wasn’t around in the early days but I believe it was pretty cool place to learn about the scene and buy/sell/talk street art
That’s a great shame as the passion lives strong in many

Was 2018 the year that killed Street Art collecting?, by thos on Dec 10, 2018 22:22:17 GMT 1, Since I haven't really had the chance to attend so many of the fun art shows/fairs/events, my knowledge is pretty limited on this, but have art releases (I'm thinking of Invader's recent show) always been filled with placeholders and flippers with no knowledge of what they're flipping?

Mexico City’s Saner has had a great year in the streets and in the galleries.

Was 2018 the year that killed Street Art collecting?, by nobokov on Dec 11, 2018 1:23:21 GMT 1, Just cause there is no money to be made doesn't mean it's dead. Faile dog - utter classic for $125 - what's not to like. Edit: I notice I do seem to be mentioning the Faile a lot - just happens to be a good example Sure there are some nice classics being rereleased, but it feels like a remastered best of record. I guess even visual artists get to a point where they rely on their old hits. Next we'll see Shep release an Andre with diamond dust

Was 2018 the year that killed Street Art collecting?, by NYart on Dec 11, 2018 2:03:22 GMT 1, As long as there are new artists and new collectors coming into the scene it’s not dying. I wonder how many people became interested in street art after Banksys stunt at Sotheby’s made the front page across the world? I’m only a few years in and still enjoying it and on occasion coming across a new artist I like. Just because some of the old guards arguably aren’t putting out their most inspired work doesn’t make the entire genre dead.

Was 2018 the year that killed Street Art collecting?, by spaceboiiii on Dec 11, 2018 2:18:16 GMT 1, Sounds like the street art world learning how to class up like fine arts. Wait till the day you walk into an art museum and after a room of Twomblys, Bradfords, and Basquiats - you might find a room of Banksy or Invaders.
The love for urban art is huge and shows in participation. 2018 did well at testing just how big it can be right now.

A lot of people I know that used to frequent this site, don't anymore (well don't post anyway) due to a lot of discussion about money/flips etc. And EB activity is down because the site has been a piece of s**t for a good 12 months now - they're supposedly in the process of re-hauling it entirely.

International engagement booming as well

Was 2018 the year that killed Street Art collecting?, by hiya on Dec 11, 2018 10:25:39 GMT 1, I would say 2018 has been a discovery for many new art fans and collectors, a positive thing really. Artists and aspiring artists managing to make a living with people spending money of tangible beautiful work.
