This is from Feburary this year. I'm wondering if this investment company had wished they'd held on a bit longer before selling their large Banksy spray canvas for $1.5m.

Sotheby's Art Auctions โข NEW YORK ๐บ๐ฒ, by Deleted on May 13, 2021 11:58:11 GMT 1, Tremendous result for the artist and the auction house. Really is all about the image now...
All prints including the iconic ones have shown signs of weakness.
Iโd presume the big hitters prefer anything on canvas to prints and itโs beginning to show. You would think the gap will widen more and more over time.

The market is not guaranteed to increase continually, especially with the state of the pandemic effecting all investment markets. Look at the silence here when a few prints did not excel at auction as expected. Buying in at todayโs levels is a risk , if purchased a decade ago you can afford to sit tight 32% is a good return, when holding out for the max return in investment markets is when you will get burned

Sotheby's Art Auctions โข NEW YORK ๐บ๐ฒ, by Charlie Bronson on May 13, 2021 17:18:11 GMT 1, Auctions are always tricky imho. Bidding wars often take on the role of whoโs got the bigger stick, or, โfuck that guy Iโm not going to let him outbid meโ as opposed to the true value of the piece.
Iโve been to no less than 100 high end car auctions and Iโve seen it happen dozens of times, right in front of me. Watching people bid WAY over the real value of a car because they donโt want to take the ego hit. Not saying thatโs what definitely happened here, but one would think that itโs a possibility due to the simple fact that comparatively, this piece was well over paid for. Then again, wtf do I know๐คท๐ปโโ๏ธ.

It was. Each had a slight difference. The edition of 15 had then in white matte, white gloss and hessian backgrounds.

I still disagree as it would have been stated in the info of the auction.

The SIGNED girl with Balloon print was passed as it didn't reach its estimate of 400k Dollar - not long ago an unsigned girl with Balloon print went for over 1 million pound. Im sorry to say but sadly for me it looks like his market did go down massive lately.

Yes perhaps the owners of that unsigned were drinking heavily whilst bidding ๐พ๐พ๐คฆ.
There's just been so many bansky auctions of late also. Selling a ยฃ400 pound banksy print now is life changing for some which is great.
It's been discussed a lot on here that the covid spending on assets has to slow down at some stage and all markets will correct. So your probably correct and I agree the unsigned prints would drop in price more than the signed. Although some lower editions won't drop at all. Always been supply and demand with Banksy.

The spending has barely begun, very soon we are going to see the biggest boom for over 90 years and asset prices will go through the roof, we are probably two years away from the pent up demand (and savings) running out of steam. What's happened in the Banksy print market is merely a speculative bubble bursting, pretty much all other blue chip artists are enjoying strong growth in their prints and originals market.

I kind of agree with 'derivitive's' post below, although I don't think massive crash, more of an easing down. All these mega rich will start up spending big on things like they did in normal times ie. luxury holidays etc.. we'll have to see how it pans out.

I'm still expecting a massive crash in everything between August and January. People need to pay for their Disney vacations and cruises they haven't been able to take for 18+months. I think the data and research would disagree (see BofE research) less than 10% of people intend on spending their savings, a much larger number intend to invest hence why asset prices will rise in the next few years (what comes after is the worry). Inflation is a risk that could cut the party short however I personally think that once production picks up some of the supply side inflation will come under control. www.bankofengland.co.uk/bank-overground/2020/how-has-covid-affected-household-savings
