Harland Miller Book • In Shadows I Boogie, by doncarlos45 on May 13, 2019 23:11:54 GMT 1, I went tonight.......however it was 30 min queue to buy the book and then an even longer queue to get Harland to sign it. He seemed to be having fun and posing for pics etc which made me think that it could be an hr or so to get a copy signed.
In the end, as I’ve already got a signed copy on order I decided to pass on buying anymore which I would have happily passed on at cost

Harland Miller Book • In Shadows I Boogie, by Love Is In The Air on May 13, 2019 23:38:39 GMT 1, I went down but was buying three books(two for friends) so sadly couldn't really afford to buy more or carry anymore for forum members. Apologies.
I queued for over an hour but was worth it, Harland was on great form and happy to write your favourite HM book title cover etc inside the books too and pose for pics. Gary Lineker, Jarvis Cocker and Ronnie Wood were all there briefly - although obviously they didn't queue up like us! Must have been good few hundred there and apart from getting up to speak to celeb friends who came in he was signing solidly for all the time I was there and there was a big queue even when I left at 8.30pm.
The two newest prints - jointly done by White Cube and Manifold - were on display and looked very nice, heavy with layers of paint and I would say if anyone has managed to get both they would look fantastic side by side in a big room. And if you can afford both I am guessing you would have big rooms in your house!

This summarises it very well. A lot of people missed a trick as they only got the inside cover signed. Others managed to get a random page signed, or the page featuring their favourite image (Each page of the book is effectively a print of an individual piece of his work).

Harland Miller Book • In Shadows I Boogie, by teabaggins on May 15, 2019 22:25:11 GMT 1, Will the Hong Kong market snap these up? No witty titles on the new ones apparently- just very graphic. I love the context his new book provides around his various series of paintings and how they have evolved. No idea if they will resonate in HK or not but I imagine the use of single word opens the possibility up a bit more for interpretation than some of the phrases used previously.
From White Cube on the upcoming paintings:
"On the ground floor, a series of new large-scale paintings make reference to the layout of book covers, presenting large, overlaid letter forms using a pop-like palette. At the bottom of each, a neutral coloured band displays a ‘title’, in the form of short, enigmatic words such as ‘sin’, ‘luv’, or ‘boss’ alongside Miller’s own name as their ‘author’. In a departure from the artist’s previous and well-known series of paintings that used the recognisable covers of vintage Penguin paperbacks, here text is approached more formally, as a painterly device where the negative space, lines and curves of letters become integral to both image and composition. Through the process of isolating and overlaying various letter forms, Miller creates a sense of fractured space within the painting, a receding visual field that effectively deconstructs both the form and referent of language itself. In the work XXX (2019), the letters are built up from layers of reds, oranges and yellows, their image suggesting objects in motion, where several forms are compressed at once, kaleidoscopic and transparent, like a series of sequential, transparent slides.
Foregrounding the exploration of text, image and the language of painting, Miller draws on a wide range of cultural references in these works, including ’60s and ’70s graphic design and the bold, upbeat covers of post-war psychology books. More specifically, they connect with American mid-century painting, a constant point of reference within the artist’s work. Suggesting the very beginnings of a narrative but remaining abstract and open-ended, they offer multiple interpretations. By using his own name as author within the image, Miller opens up a third space where the artist becomes his own alter-ego. Through a process of formal painterly exploration, fact and fiction become blurred, creating a visual rupture that provokes, questions and draws attention to the inherent possibilities of language within the visual field.
In addition to several hard-edged paintings, a new series of smaller-scale paintings are expressively rendered, tactile and painterly, with impasto, drips and bleeds of paint marking their surface. Their highly gestural style makes direct reference to Abstract Expressionism and, in particular, to Jasper Johns’ series ‘0 through 9’ (1960-61), where numbers are overlaid and confined within the tight, rectangular limits of the medium itself."

Harland Miller Book • In Shadows I Boogie, by Deleted on May 15, 2019 22:39:28 GMT 1, Some of his prints are way overpriced then. 15K for originals? 13K for prints...
Big question... is the Asian market (2nd largest art market) going to go for his style of art... not sure... He should have tried to make some famous Chinese book covers or at least made a cover in Chinese. Is the penguin logo even famous or known in Asia? I'm not sure how his humor will translate in other languages as well. Be interesting to see how this turns out. Either this will be a massive hit or this will be a MAJOR hurdle for him and his collectors in the long run. Seemed like even his gallery wasn't too sure about how the show would turn out. Hope it goes well.

The 15k originals are small and mostly pencil. And it’s plus taxes.

His work is collected globally
The works are all graphic and not a Penguin in sight.....try to see the PDF for reference to what the work looks like. The small works on paper are preparatory sketches for the bigger paintings and they shipped approx 30 pieces so there is plenty to choose from to make the final hang.
I'll try and take some images when I get there and share them here.

My belief is that even though the show is in Asia many paintings will end up in homes around the world!
