Maybe the box set. Those "May" be limited. KAWS isn't too fond of flipping though, and the last batch of snoopy's could hold the world over it seemed like. I think they ended up giving them away for free at one point with purchase.

Yes Uniqlo ran a promo at one point that any purchase over $50 got you a free large size one (retailed at 34.99 I believe?)

KAWS x Uniqlo, by avec art on Nov 17, 2018 12:13:09 GMT 1, Here is what is written on the glass transfer in the window of my towns Uniqlo verbatim;
Collaboration between kaws the innovative artist who continues to captivate fans worldwide with his elegant and witty collections, and โSesame Streetโ. Enjoy the playful graphics with a new pair of eyes, featuring the iconic street sign and characters like Elmo, creatively interpreted by KAWS.
Apart from the clunky construction, there's a few points I find quite weird. Firstly I don't consider Kaws to be a particularly 'witty' artist. Clever for sure, but it's not exactly humour. So what is the 'iconic street sign', my guess here they are referring to the eyes. Well is that really an 'iconic street sign', I feel it's more of a motif.
No mention of the fact these childhood characters have been killed off and perhaps re-born. Seems like they're simply attempting to sanitise this underling darkness to not upset the public.

KAWS x Uniqlo, by Deleted on Nov 17, 2018 12:26:48 GMT 1, I've started this thread because I've discovered the ability to confuse a stuffed toy with art, and well ... I'm a bit of a sad case. They 'drop' on Monday. I spoke to some dude in Uniqlo and he told me that the people working there aren't allowed to purchase anything until a week after release. I explained they're available online.
Presumably they mean with the staff discount. They are trying to stop employees flipping them.

KAWS x Uniqlo, by fonebone45 on Nov 17, 2018 20:31:53 GMT 1, I like Kaws and have loved watching his rise in the art world, but at this point a lot of this stuff has now just become "stuff" as opposed to pieces of collectible art. Not that there's anything wrong with having stuff if that's what you're into, but I wouldn't consider any of these street art, or urban art anymore.
Thoughts?

KAWS x Uniqlo, by avec art on Nov 17, 2018 20:49:01 GMT 1, defying categorisation? I'm not sure if he's claiming this is 'art', isn't that just something we're projecting onto it. It seems as though people want artists to 'brand' themselves, (often ignoring those that don't) but when they do, we're going to set parameters on them?

KAWS x Uniqlo, by avec art on Nov 17, 2018 21:51:11 GMT 1, I completely understand what you're saying, which is partly why I started the thread in the first place. Kaws has made paintings where arguably all he has done is crossed out the eyes and it'll sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars. So if that is art, why should it not be art when it's applied to an affordable soft toy. Is it now monetary value that defines something as art or not? Sounds to me like double standards.

Not sure why the complete box is more expensive than buying singly. Seems a bit odd. Only by 40p but I would have thought they could have made it maybe a fiver cheaper as a saving bonus for buying the complete set

Otherwise they just chuck it in the paper Kaws bag which they're already giving out with clothes purchases. I know I want an Ernie ... for my baby of course. For some reason Bert is the only one not on display.

Personally I don't think just adding Xs for eyes makes it not just another Sesame Street toy. I don't think enough has been done to change it for it to count as "a collab". Seems like it's just a way for these companies to cash in and make a bunch of money off something that's "cool to the kids". Which to me cheapens the whole brand overall.
I do still like his prints, and statues, etc.

KAWS x Uniqlo, by avec art on Nov 17, 2018 23:58:16 GMT 1, the dead eyes make it instantly recognisable to those in the know as having Kaws do his thing on it.
I'm not sure how I feel about an artist having to brand themselves anyhow. It's just how things are these days in all fields. So if this cheapens it I couldn't care less, however this sort of mass merchandising doesn't appear to be having a negative effect on auction prices. Murakami does it even more so.
To some extent I think there can be comparisons made with Banksy soup cans. I don't think many question if those are art or not, but they were also unlimited, were also a reasonably small alteration and reference to an existing artwork/theme and comparable prices (inflation and all that)

KAWS x Uniqlo, by avec art on Nov 18, 2018 1:30:01 GMT 1, wait .. as a 'gallery' I'm meant to know stuff? ... that's me screwed then. I'm a printmaker anyway so I have an excuse to not know stuff. I agree with you btw, the whole thing is part of the art and there are abstract underlying meanings to effectively killing off characters and re-birthing them this way. Been saying that all along. People talk about Kaws but I rarely see analysis into the meaning of what he does on the forum, which I would like more of. It's easy to say 'I know why he does this, and you don't', instead why not explain your ideas.

I actually agree with your previous post, if it's art then it's also art applied to mere toys since art is not meant to be primarily about money as too many here seem to think. People (here) get very touchy about their favourite artist and sometimes it makes it difficult to even hold a decent conversation with unconditional (hardcore) apostles as soon as one challenges or simply questions anything related to said artist (semi God).

When the toys were limited they were frequently faked. Now they are not. And they are more expensive!

Whenever I see an artist Iโm unfamiliar with, or maybe a past celebrity - saw The Aviator on Netflix recently, realized I didnโt really know about Howard Hughes read about him for 2 days. Was talking with gfโs 87 year old mom with family at dinner and talking icons, everyone talking Monroe and she says Hedy Lamarr, to which all laughed. Turns out Hedy is a fascinating woman.
Iโm sure youโll enjoy reading about and researching Kaws, whether because you like him or think heโs fooled everyone. I have a few of his early works, donโt care much for the new stuff.

KAWS x Uniqlo, by avec art on Nov 18, 2018 2:58:48 GMT 1, you're telling me I should know stuff but don't, yet won't explain what it is I don't know, and you call me condensing !! .. well. Look this is not about me, so will try to steer discussion back to what this all means. I know there has been some chatter here and I genuinely appreciate it if you've contributed, but I've also been here years and I know how conversation on Kaws is so heavily weighted on values, I'm probably as guilty as anyone else for that. I don't think I've read much lately, but I got a few ideas, and more into discussion than d**k waving.
