As for Hebru's secondary sales, they are still rising from what can see... where are you seeing rising sales? ...wait, do you own hebru's?
Those mentioned above cannot afford this piece, this is a great piece and should sell out.

If you are talking about some of his designer toys not so much but different markets..... also sneaker heads with no job able to wait in line all day for a pop up can't afford to sit on a couple hundred bucks for long so they drop their price, thanks boys..... but with much of Chicago/NY urban artists you do get a lot of flippers hoping to catch the next big thing which floods the secondary market. Those mentioned above cannot afford this piece, this is a great piece and should sell out. |

Don't ever bother with originals lol. I've seen 75% under cost and still not selling lol
He should've never left Chicago, not signed with current representation, and gone a LOT slower on toys

The problem with this forum is the ignorance on "non-white people" art. You can't seriously tell me this print is not more pleasing than a Paul Insect which has hideous colors atop of a face as a comparison to cost of prints....

I'm actually an eskimo, so being black isnt enough for me to consider an artist good or interesting.
The way I see it, if I was the type to want a Hebru piece, I would buy any rocket boy print and never consider buying another Hebru Brantley piece again.

I donโt know much about this artist. Iโve only seen the flyboy prints and toys. And I think one other print in this more serious style.
Print prices seem to have been going up and up.
But itโs normal for people to ask questions, especially when an artist is new (or new to this forum).

For me, his race has nothing to do with me not liking the art. There are plenty of non white people who are amongst my favorite working artists right now. I think Kehinde Wiley, Epaul Julien, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Nina Chanel and many others are making incredible and important art. Being open to other cultures and not being interested in Hebruโs Art are not mutually exclusive.
From a purely aesthetic POV, I donโt really find the palette or composition all that interesting. I find the recent Paul Insect vastly more pleasing than this print.

Anyway, the last year I have received quite a few pm:s on instagram from ppl wanting to buy my hebru prints (they are not for sale). The prices have been higher that I expected them to be, so apparently there is a market for them even if itโs not mentioned on here.
However I donโt feel this particular image, I mean what is that? Two boys with waves as hair, is one of them wearing a mask? The work simply dont do anything for me. Think he normally makes interesting works, loads for the community and are an interesting artist thou, this price jump seem steep but mostly because I donโt like the image.

Also Spike Lee produced movie "See You Yesterday" jacked his flyboy/flygirl character.
His anime characters just aren't that great and his fine art nobody seems to want. Some of it looks like David Choe. Also watching him make his originals using a projector also killed for me. He posted it once on his istagram.

Good luck to him, but I think most of his fan base is not spending that type of money. Remember for years you could buy Kaws stuff reasonably before it got too pricey. Built the brand. Brantley seems to have skipped that period of time and went directly to overpricing. I think the flippers/hype guys would invest in something else more lucrative.

Hebru started what in the early 2000s Kaws in the 90s way different times and much easier to get noticed after the 2000s. Then for Hebru his first big sale was to Jay Z in 2012 for $20,000 and heโs been selling to hip hop and Chicago millionaires since. He has what more than double the followers Paul Insect has, keep referring to him as this forum seems to love his work and seems to think those warrant high price tags for prints. Hebru has a brand and growing following that indicates heโll be around a long time. This latest print is also a glimpse at his evolution. Excited to see what is next. |
