The later IMO. Even if Obama's legacy was diminished with time (which I personally don't think it will), as others have mentioned, this image will be one of the top iconic images whenever an image is needed to show art and politics intersecting.

A signed Progress on eBay recently went for about US1,300. Presumably it was a legit piece. They usually tend to sit for sale at the 6k mark. I would suspect demand for the Progress ones are a bit less because they are smaller in print dimension and not as iconic.

There are two different versions of Progress, the original was 24x36”, this was the first Obama print Shepard made and is the same size as the Hope image, and then a small 9x12” was produced. Both are screen prints, none of the Hope prints are screen prints. That one that sold for $1,300 is most likely the smaller print. While the progress print is not as popular than the hope print, the 24x36” version fetches much more than $1,300.

The progress prints were made before obama’s campaign got involved. Shep made them to help promote Obama in the California primaries and the campaign reached out afterward and asked to use the image. If I remember correctly, the progress prints were initially sold to raise money so Shep could do his grassroots pastering in California for Obama. After the campaign got involved, Progress was changed to Hope because that was the slogan the campaign was using.

the 24x36” print was released on January 30, 2008 and was an edition of 350

the 9x12” print was released on March 2, 2008 and was an edition of 400

HOPE is an edition of 600 for sure.

I would assume and hope that a big auction house like Sotheby's was strict on provenancy.

This copy appears to be pretty heavily damaged on the front. I'm not surprised in the slightest with the quoted range. It's not clear how it's mounted, but that could be a factor also.

Also -- the 24x36 Hope was never screen printed. Every version is a litho. The numbered edition is on thicker paper (same used for screen prints), while unnumbered is thinner (like paster paper). Progress is the only 24x36 Obama image that's screen printed.

Not necessarily fake, the auction houses are just incorrectly calling them screenprints just like you have been.

I've got a small 1/400 from the "Progress" series, if you're interested. I was just going to list it here because I haven't even been displaying it, and it deserves better than a closet...
