Martin Whatson - Passé, by Inknart on Nov 9, 2019 16:07:17 GMT 1, zero luck since switching to 100% lottery .... would be nice to have at least a chance for an online drop of the main edition. Have never been successful for a single piece at GP. Only thing I ever got was a snik piece nobody wanted 6 years ago. I’m assuming it’s like 60% VIP 15% Vault 25% for Lottery. If you look around hard enough, it’s always the same people with all the hard to get Whatsons.

Not getting this allowed me to get the Kagan print so I guess I can't be too upset.

Martin Whatson - Passé, by sean1397 on Dec 1, 2019 3:47:16 GMT 1, Why do people get so upset with flippers? I have not flipped anything but flippers serve two purposes - they let people buy things they miss like me and they help artists.
Trust me if artists didn't benefit from flippers and concert holders didn't benefit from scalpers they would eliminate them!
If you don't like a flipper just ignore him and dont buy from him. Calling him scum really doesn't do anything productive.

Martin Whatson - Passé, by met on Dec 1, 2019 5:18:38 GMT 1, Was nowhere mentioned , so I started this thread. Personally I really like this image. Print will be released as a lottery. There is a main Ed of 295, some variants on acrylic, a brass and the washed edition. pics can be found on the release page. Link to Release Page
this here is my favorite variant: Washed, gold leaf, handfinished 50 edition
Can somebody who's familiar with ballet help explain the title here, Passé?
There doesn't seem to be a real connection (at least not one that is apparent to me) between (a) any stage of the passé relevé movement of the legs and (b) the above image. Even less so when taking into account the position of the ballerina's arms.
I wondered if Martin Whatson may have just picked a ballet term at random when naming his print, with minimal concern about what the term actually meant.

It also means : no longer fashionable - or - out of date. When referring to people: past one's prime.
So he might not be reffering to any ballet term at all. But since that would be a bit of an odd coïncedence it could be a dual meaning.

So if Whatson's using Passé to mean "no longer fashionable - or - out of date", Is he referring to the Ballerina, the image concept or himself? I mean, En Pointe (his previous Ballerina) can be a ballet (tippy-toes) thing or (is now also) used to describe something as fashionable or "now". On point/en pointe. Interesting.

The flipper automatically blocks real buyers from buying and then forces them to pay a highly inflated price for the same item. Remove flippers and that item gets much cheaper.
It is imposible for an artist to ban a flipper. There's a difference between a flipper and someone who resells the item. Flippers are the worst kind. Hate em.

I don’t agree with calling flippers derogatory names, etc., but with all due respect you’re mistaken if you think flippers serve two purposes as both things you included are without merit; 1st if flippers weren’t buying the prints than you wouldn’t have missed out on the primary sale...they quite literally take art out of true collectors hands. 2nd how do you think flippers help artists? Do you believe they contact artists and offer to split the profits with them 😉? Anyway, best to you.

Cheers for this, but my comment referred to a possible disconnect between the actual ballet movement and Martin Whatson's image of the same name.
Take the multiple variations of passé. Then consider every possible freeze-frame snapshot of the movement — i.e. each sequential stage, from whichever starting position of the feet (like fourth or fifth, whether or not en pointe) until the close.
Do any of them match the image depicted in Whatson's print?
Based on my restricted knowledge of ballet, the answer I arrived at was "No". Admittedly, however, the question itself is pedantic and niche-interest.

I struggle to see the difference between someone who flips at an inflated price within days or weeks of a release, and someone who resells at an inflated price months or years later and the print has been stored flat, never hung. Both seem to have bought to make money, the rest is just timing.

I struggle to see the difference between someone who flips at an inflated price within days or weeks of a release, and someone who resells at an inflated price months or years later and the print has been stored flat, never hung. Both seem to have bought to make money, the rest is just timing. Flipper is driven solely by profit. They buy every release and will use bots to do so. Their purpose is to get the most amount of money for an item in the quickest amount of time. They don't care about the going rate. They don't care about the artform, culture, artist, etc. There is no intention of keeping the piece. They may not even like it.
The reseller that I'm referring to is someone who bought with the intention of putting up on their wall. A fan of the artist and a fan of the item. For whatever reason, they have to sell it. The sale can be years down the road. After a market value has been established they sell the item and on a forum like here, they sometimes sell for less.
The worst thing is the flipper comes HERE and insults the intelligence of the people here. Go to ebay. I don't even care too much about flipping there. But don't like it here. Just my opinion.
So the difference is mainly intention.

Martin Whatson - Passé, by John The Badgers on Dec 2, 2019 14:17:13 GMT 1, Agree with Jaylove, just my addition the the 'help the artists' statement above, I went to the recent Stik/Noir signing at the IWM.
Nice fella's the pair of them, spent all day signing the cards/posters, charity event.
I'm staggered at how many of these items now on eBay? If I was the artist, sitting there making the effort with people, signing cards etc, then if I saw them being sold, that would give me the right hump, and think twice about doing it again.
