Honestly though, how much thought actually goes into prints when there's a new one every week?

Personally... I dig what he's doing. It makes his prints more accessible to the less affluent, yet still keeps a good balance for collectors. I guess he could take more time and "put more thought" into it and release prints less frequently... but then he'd need to charge a few hundred $$ as opposed to $35 to make a living ($35USD!! for some quality work!). (i'm still a noob and have very few prints, but from what I've seen... )the prints are excellent in quality and the pieces he's put out lately still have powerful imagery (well... a good majority anyways) to get the messages he wants to set out

At least according to this lot. As far as I can tell, the quality of an artist is based on the price of their work. I thought Banksy was killer because of the reach and audacity of his street art. I love Shep for the same thing. The guy is not only talented, but relentless--20 years of pasting cities around the globe with his propoganda/phenomenology experiment.

So, while you're not alone in admiring Shepard (perhaps the greatest street artist of all time), you won't find many of us who share your affinity for Obey Giant prints.

Read the threads, you'll see what I mean. Unless the artist is "the next Banksy" (read: what other prints can I flip for 10x my price in 12 months?!) or somebody who can somehow convince buyers to pay 100k for a dot matrix, bubble-jet P.O.S., then you're simply pissing into the wind.

I think youve got it wrong...

Fairey = rated street artist (in my book anyway - i'd say 70 of his stuff is good).

Hirst = over-rated to the point where he could shit on canvas and it'd be worshipped. One good idea doesn't make you a legend...

More work goes into a giclee?
The pre-printing computer work can easily be applied to screen prints too.
True definition of Giclee, little squirt in french meaning it's an ink jet, press print.

As opposed to making 2, 3, 4 or more screens (whole lot of work there for starters) placeing the paper and hand pulling every colour, you've got to make sure the registration is correct, and cleaning everything afterwards.
I agree that it's still art, but you can print giclees one at a time if you wished rather than doing the full run and having unsold kicking about.

I have a friend in the Giclee business (or as he unpretentiously calls it large format inkjet printing) and his price for an A1 print (841mmX594mm) is £11 printed on coated matt 170gsm (more for better quality paper) if you wanted 11 prints or more the cost will go down to £9 each, if you were clever you'd do them two up on an A0 sheet and only pay £14 (obviously that works out at £7 for an A1) and he's making a good profit on those prices.
