Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by turntored on Mar 18, 2020 13:47:33 GMT 1, Nuart Aberdeen due to take place at the end of April has just been postponed.
Big loss to the city if it can't be re-scheduled. Apart from being a great weekend it's a real boost to the local economy.
Something to look forward to in the summer I hope.

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by jimmyjam on Mar 18, 2020 14:02:00 GMT 1, As I mentioned many times cash will be king. Art market typically is the last market to crash and the first to come up but this coronavirus is another beast.
The art market was already struggling for the most part, except for a few main auction pieces. Most of these galleries and artists this past year or so have been selling way overpriced prints to make up the difference, this is common practice during slow downs, which I notice many on this forum fell for and bought ridiculously over priced prints, myself included on a few purchases.
Now, not being able to even see the piece, pick up, or get anything framed for months will slow things down a bit even more. Delivery may stop for place unless itโs medical or for food. Auction houses and galleries are shutting down potentially for months. 20 percent of Americans may be out of a job from this and stocks could dive worse than during the Great Depression. This will affect art and I could see actually a lot of mid range pieces and prints get drastically affected by this. 3k for a print right now seem absolutely ridiculous when left and right my friends here in the US are losing their jobs.
Cash will be king and at the end of the year and next year there will be great opportunities to buy items; especially with cash.

Might see more artists doing Q&As or doing colour studies while theyโre stuck at home (as Sweettoof is currently doing)

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by skAcid on Mar 18, 2020 18:24:37 GMT 1, Private hospitals: offer your beds to the NHS for free!
7.9 million Brits could be hospitalised because of coronavirus -- and right now our NHS doesnโt have enough beds to treat them.
Private hospitals want to rent their beds to the NHS for an astronomical ยฃ2.4 million a day.
This is a public health emergency -- NOT a business opportunity.
Demand all private healthcare firms give the NHS beds and equipment rent free!

In Greece the state passed a law for requisition of private hospital beds and intensive care units.

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by mw on Mar 18, 2020 18:55:31 GMT 1, Looks like all UK schools are being shut down on Friday. Good luck to those with children!
One of mine's shut yesterday. Good luck with putting all key worker's kids together, one gets ill, you've got a whole host of people unable to work.
Definitely need to crack down more, there's so many people out and about in close areas.

Not as big as when they shut down everything. Only a matter of days if you look at curve and the number of people not thinking /caring. The reason why the Asian counties are seeing things flatten out is either harsh disciple or a highly disciplined society.... They're not thinking "oh @#ck it, I'll go down the pub, I got a day off"

We've left it open long enough that nhs full capacity is going to be tested. Now it's time to behave or shutdown otherwise people will be watching their old relatives suffocating to death because there's no room at the inn.

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by mw on Mar 18, 2020 20:16:47 GMT 1, We've left it open long enough that nhs full capacity is going to be tested. Now it's time to behave or shutdown otherwise people will be watching their old relatives suffocating to death because there's no room at the inn. In his press conferences, Boris acts like people are unhappy with being asked to make these changes in their lives, and is trying to justify these changes in behaviour. But everyone I have spoken to already gets that and just wants them to do more, and sooner. And to make definite decisions, and to stop throwing maybes around. The constant U-turns just reek of mismanagement. The decision to keep the schools open, then to close them a handful of days later, is just bizarre. What was gained from that, and how much spreading occurred during that time. My vote is to just shutdown now.
Most people are happy to adhere but I've seen so many people today engaging socially in cafes etc.
I'm definitely no Tory but Boris has done the right thing. If you shut down too soon there won't be enough people with immunity come next winter (or whenever) and this whole nightmare will start again. The pain and financial implications of having to do this twice would be so much worse. It's a gamble, getting close to capacity, but suppressing too long will just just elongate the pain and potentially cause another Spike.
He might act a baffoon, (although not as daft as the questions he gets asked) but there is science behind the madness.

I would agree with you if we were ready for this, but we still don't have enough ventilators. I think schools should have shut this week imo. Italy had a lockdown 10 days ago, but deaths are still rising. Also there is still no proof on the immunity of the virus or if it will decline in the summer months. Apparently though over 40,000 are being charged with violating the lockdown in Italy, I hope the UK citizens have more sense, but not so sure they will.

From what i read, there is a 2-8 week horizon on severe cases, and it takes two weeks to get better from a mild case. So i imagine it will take another week or so before we start to see improvements in Italys situation and then another few weeks after that for the worst cases to be resolved.

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by mw on Mar 18, 2020 20:56:19 GMT 1, Italy had 3,000 cases, similar to us, in 4 th March Italy shut down on 9 th march. China took roughly 4-5 weeks to go from shutdown to little or no new cases. Only time will tell. My thought, however, is that hopefully there will be consensus on opening up again as different counties are on different trajectories. We all need to sing from the same sheet.

Government are Scared of potential civil unrest Not enough emergency personnel to deal with a crisis based on worst case scenario
We've left it open long enough that nhs full capacity is going to be tested. Now it's time to behave or shutdown otherwise people will be watching their old relatives suffocating to death because there's no room at the inn. Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by Bram on Mar 18, 2020 21:05:31 GMT 1, Italy had 3,000 cases, similar to us, in 4 th March Italy shut down on 9 th march. China took roughly 4-5 weeks to go from shutdown to little or no new cases. Only time will tell. My thought, however, is that hopefully there will be consensus on opening up again as different counties are on different trajectories. We all need to sing from the same sheet. Or balcony

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by Terry Fuckwitt on Mar 18, 2020 21:10:08 GMT 1, I would agree with you if we were ready for this, but we still don't have enough ventilators. My source: www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/coronavirus-symptoms/#duration
Appreciate the link, but that's confused me even more. We are still told to self isolate for 7 days and with family for 14 days. Unless I've read it wrong then we should isolate for a lot longer.

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by Express Post on Mar 18, 2020 21:28:41 GMT 1, Also a few drawing oranges.
Joshua Vides is doing a Q&A through his IG and the jerrygogosian account is soliciting questions for a podcast. (i dont know how to add IG links) Might see more artists doing Q&As or doing colour studies while theyโre stuck at home (as Sweettoof is currently doing)
