David Shrigley • Make Your Mark, by shy on May 1, 2020 21:16:06 GMT 1, Double Cheeseburger is great so is the Cactus print. And excellent price point.
Sold out in a snap.
I repeat, I love Shrigley's art man! I really dig it!
So what happened with "Make your mark"?
What does that even mean?
I just don't understand the print?

David Shrigley • Make Your Mark, by robo on May 1, 2020 21:16:37 GMT 1, I personally like this one. Was lucky enough to buy it at the 2nd tier.
Classic Shrigley word and image play; I actually prefer this to the similar original from the Danish gallery - that one was a bit trite and throwaway. This one isn't trying too hard for a punchline, but manages to work both as a serious statement and a comic combination.
I know most here disagree - just my view

David Shrigley • Make Your Mark, by robo on May 1, 2020 21:19:45 GMT 1, So what happened with "Make your mark"? What does that even mean? To me that's a statement of artistic intent, possibly even a manifesto for Shrigley's own artistic intent. Make your mark means literally make a visible mark (what most artists do) and make a strong impression (which is what that idiom means). He's then combined that with a crazy wild squiggle and the line "let the mark reflect who you are", which is what Shrigley is (or you the viewer could be).

Congrats on the purchase!
Can you please explain what the wording of the print is trying to say?
I just don't get it?

The Print unfortunately still does not resonate with me. It just lingers there and doesn't do anything to me.
Love art that grabs me and pulls me in--- making me really want it!
This print is just, well--- there.

Without doubt, any of these preferences are personal. If it ain't for you, no point in trying to like it - because there will certainly be more pieces by him coming. One thing I do find with Shrigley (and others) is it's sometimes worth sleeping on it - the next day you might like it more (or you might like it even less).

One thing I want to add to this is that the mark itself is _almost_ painterly and abstract, so he's also playing with forms of art. It's a really thick, playful, painted line. It could almost be part of a Howard Hodgkin painting. But it isn't - it's abstract painting as Shrigley humour.

David Shrigley • Make Your Mark, by Love Is In The Air on May 1, 2020 21:39:08 GMT 1, Great comments Robo. This is what I come to the forum for. Don’t love the print but I respect your opinion and you’ve explained its merits, what it means to you and made me think and look at the print again.
Congrats on the purchase and I also think you’re right that it’s quite normal to love Shrigley and not love every print he sells.

Was intersting for me to try putting why I like it into words.
It's similar with other pieces I own like Particles of Truth, which I suspect is not that popular. To me he's making several comments on the fundamental nature of truth, whilst also being silly in his own unique way. Again, it's depth, lightness and humour wrapped together.

so you are thinking about it- trying to process the "Nothingness" connection and meaning of it
and so ultimately Shrigley makes his MARK in your Head!
And since it's a SNAKE it is SLITHERING into your thoughts and your Brain!
Planting itself inside of you like a VIRUS in your Brain.

I'm currently planning on hanging a 2 x 2 grid of framed Shrigleys that will include this one.
Hope anyone else who bought this is enjoying looking forward to theirs too!

I think this is something that is often overlooked when discussing Shrigley's work. It always works better when displayed in multiples for some reason. Anyone that would judge a stand alone Shrigley may be missing a trick.

I think they do stand up alone, but yes a few can work together nicely. Especially as they’re all pretty much if not exactly the same size.
