Banksy Monkey Poison, by lv90210 on Jul 2, 2020 23:50:58 GMT 1, $2,340,000 all in - a good days work. Because the lot was guaranteed you cannot make that assumption. The only fact that can be reported is the hammer.
When you are not even 1% close to the game and don’t understand how it works you can comment, if not stick to your UAA prints - good night....

Banksy Monkey Poison, by irl1 on Jul 3, 2020 0:27:30 GMT 1, This Lot was not only guaranteed, but it was guaranteed by a third party (outside of the auction house but usually someone who has a close relationship with the house). The terms and conditions of the sale of this lot are unique and an undisclosed contract drawn up. In the case of third party guarantors, they are allowed to bid on the lot they are guaranteeing. This has long been hailed as unethical and opaque. The contract will often allow the guarantor to not pay the usual BP. It would appear that some members on here (lv~Iq) don’t understand that...and also don’t understand that there are different BPs depending on hammer price...LV adding 30% to the hammer as if that is the final price shows his inexperience - it would appear his comments are aspirational only. They have it marked sold for $2,000,000 including fees

Against a $1.8 bid which is just an ~11% premium. Anyone else bidding on the same lot would have paid substantially higher premium which is why guaranteed lots generally attract fewer bidders. A huge price regardless to my eyes. I liked that Judd too which was also guaranteed and similarly sold on the low estimate to the guarantor.

Banksy Monkey Poison, by Sundowner on Jul 3, 2020 8:30:50 GMT 1, I think it was a fair result for what is (let's not kid ourselves) an average Banksy work. I would like to see one of the really good Crude Oils (Vettriano Beach Rescue, Sunflowers from a Petrol Station, Show me the Monet) coming to auction to really gauge where the market is at publicly, although sadly I don't think that will happen any time soon.

Banksy Monkey Poison, by Unica on Jul 3, 2020 8:37:29 GMT 1, Another Banksy original selling for multiple millions. He is arguably the Basquiat/Haring of our generation and possibly the most famous living artist in the world. This wasn't his best original and still sold for $2 million, obviously there is a huge appetite for anything by him.
Now major collectors are buying and I'm sure institutions will start soon, just a matter of time until a major museum puts on a show of his work. Look at the queues at his shows, I would think musuems around the world would like this kind of traffic. Look at the Basquiat/Haring show at NGV, I would think a Banksy exhibition would be a huge success.
