Joshua Liner Gallery is pleased to present Dave Kinsey: New Works, an exhibition of mixed-media paintings by the Los Angeles-based artist. This full-gallery show marks Kinsey’s debut solo exhibition at Joshua Liner and his first solo in nearly two years.

Working in acrylic, spray paint, paper, wood, and ink on canvas, Dave Kinsey’s works of raw emotion draw their energy, style, and often substance from abstract expressionism mixed with urban hieroglyphics. His dynamic figures are situated within multi-layered, multi-textured atmospheres of pure abstraction. These beings displaying a mixture of defiance, triumph, and tragedy—transmit their forceful spirit through Kinsey’s range of mediums, signature style, and a high-contrast color palette.

Among this suite of medium- to large-sized paintings, the Continuum series (I, II & III) makes a powerful impact with its repeated skull and flower imagery. Viewers peer through a transparent layer of ghostlike skulls (human, animal) to a second layer of delicately rendered flowers (roses, peonies) then even deeper to an explosive, silhouetted background of chaos that hints of classic graffiti tags. Serving as contemporary vanitas, these layers of wildly contrasting content and graphic styles resolve into complex, feeling-toned compositions.

Kinsey’s portrait paintings, like King of Pop, Radio in a Box, Black Rain, and Man from Topanga, enlist these gripping contrasts in color, mark-making, and layering into finely tuned portrayals of emotional extremes. Where figures’ physical features are shut down or lack obvious expression, color and abstract forms serve to reveal and cathect underlying psychological states.

The artist suggests an even deeper resonance in his depiction of extreme contrasts, writing, “In this new body of work I explore emotional and environmental boundaries as I perceive them, in the context of the growing discord between humanity and nature. In the cyclical reality of our physical existence, beauty and death are ultimately dancing partners.”

Born in 1971 in Pittsburgh, Dave Kinsey studied at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and Art Institute of Atlanta; he currently lives and works in Los Angeles and Three Rivers, CA. Solo exhibitions of his work include : •You Are Here, ALICE Gallery, Brussels (2008); Holy Sh*t, Lazarides Gallery, UK (2008); New Works, The Public Trust, Dallas (2006); Sure, Why Not, Kinsey/DesForges Gallery, Los Angeles (2003) among others. I rolled over to the Joshua Liner Gallery to peep the Kinsey Show while I was in NYC this past weekend. His werk is truly impressive. Here are a few snaps I got if anyone is interested.

Stopped by the opening. A great show for sure. Love the turquoise pops in this series of paintings.
And, as usual it was visually spectacular and engrossing. But, I can't help but notice that this particular group of paintings lacked the quality of content that I am used to with Kinsey's work. His subjects seemed characteristically unfinished (more than just literally) almost as if, as a painter, he was just going through the motions. Regardless, even at 70%, Kinsey is miles ahead of many artists in the genre. Here's hoping for something bigger and better next time!

November 2010, Lisbon, PT - YellowPants Gallery is pleased to announce "We Dream in Colors", a group exhibition featuring new work and installations by an eclectic group of seven artists. Buff Monster, Dave Kinsey, Fefe Talavera, Maya Hayuk, Sickboy, Remed and Zosen are the roster of artists exhibiting their work together for the first time in Lisbon, Portugal.

"We Dream in Colors" brings together a group of artists whose establishment is a result of an outsider and non-traditional path through the art world. Emerging from the sub-cultures of Graffiti, Street Art, Skateboarding, Graphic Design, Music and D.I.Y. Attitude, these artists have established a very personal path that lead to continuous projects and exhibitions all over the world. Their talent and success has already been embraced by several museums and institutions such as Tate Modern, The Bristol Museum, Urbis Museum, Orebro Art Museum, and many others.

Even though each of the exhibiting artists has an individual aesthetic, form of medium, subject matter and form of expression, a strong use of color - not often found in the street and urban art movements - is present in each one of them.

"We Dream in Colors" - the first group exhibition curated by YellowPants Gallery in Lisbon, Portugal - is in itself a sample of the gallery's vision, forthcoming exhibitions and curatorial mission.

The exhibition will be hosted at Montana Shop&Gallery Lisboa - Rua da Rosa 14G, Bairro Alto, Lisbon, Portugal - opening on the 9th of December at 9:00PM and exhibiting until the 3rd of January.
