I was quite taken by the story of this piece on e-bay and actually engaged in a conversation with the seller. Of course this wasn't the same as in the window display in Aoyama but could it be that there had been more than one at the exhibition in 2002? As a fellow member put it, quite some work was put into this fake otherwise. The seller was engaging and his story seemed genuine, although with a lot of holes in the provenance trail. We went back and forth on whatsapp. So we negotiated, I actually loved the piece and thought this might be a good addition to my collection. To frame and hang. There was also a letter trail in Japanese from the original acquirer and I since I travel to Japan quite often I might be able to track him and prove the provenance, as the seller was mentioning PCO would not authenticate as the provenance trail could not be clearly established since the piece was gifted. I ended up buying the piece, not AT ALL at the price at which it was offered and received it. A few weeks later, the seller sent me an email - he had asked for another piece to be authenticated at PCO and this ended up being a fake. But PCO added an interesting second part to their email: " In regards to the piece on display at / from Aoyama exhibition, that was refused due to it not being a commercial work of art. Ir was a window display piece / prop which was not intended for sale" This was sent to the seller, but since I had the piece and it was now mine I thought I would actually send a message to PCO myself. Well I just got the reply today: Hi Vincent,
We have told Rob and the various middle men this will never get authentication.
It was a prop and was not intended for commercial sale.
The artist has confirmed this will never be authenticated.

What you have is a nice part of a Banksy installation with a little email from PC saying itโs the real deal.

Not everything in a collection has to be worth $$$$, and this wont be worth much BUT is some cool Banksy history from an installation of a 2002 exhibition. And i actually like the piece.

Clearly it isn't the same one. i would ask for this clarification 1000% as it makes a big difference whether they won't authenticate because it wasn't intended for sale or its a fake. i would send the pic of the display for reference, note the differences, and ask if there were more than one on display. |

I have the same experience with PCO as well but again, I might be wrong as well. Thanks though, warms my heart. Have to say wasn't asking for an avalanche of sh*t on this one, but was just sharing a story i thought cool for art lovers. Turns out its always easier to be know-it-all when in reality NOONE (incl myself of course) has a definite answer.

Pest Control did not look at your pictures to authenticate your piece. They do not take the time to verify authenticity for non-commercial pieces. Their first step inquiry is "is this something we authenticate?" and the answer for your piece was no. They did not continue on and compare your pictures to their archives and examine the details for authenticity. There was no reason for them to do so.

No need for attacks. Pest Control did not look at your pictures to authenticate your piece. They do not take the time to verify authenticity for non-commercial pieces. Post the screenshot. They likely were not referencing your work as a "submitted original" in that context. There is no reason for them to be showing the artist works that will never qualify for COA. |

And this was confirmed by PCO itself: "All submitted originals are put in front of the artist". Their words. Not mine, I can send you the screenshot. And PCO has a history of saying when its fake in very few words. I am not saying this is an admission of authenticity though. But its easy to say: this is fake Lets agree to disagree. I'm starting to feel sorry for Banksy right now. Every morning he must wake to shit loads of emails asking him to confirm the authenticity of 'free art from dismaland'. I don't want his job anymore, he can keep it๐
