Christie's Art Auctions , by Unica on Mar 18, 2014 17:12:39 GMT 1, That was 12 years ago, frankly I don't think much has changed. If I understand the process correctly the auction houses take roughly 25% of the hammer price from the buyer. Do they also take a percentage of what the seller makes? Or is there a set fee that the seller has to pay to have his piece placed in the auction whether is sells or not?
If someone could let me know what the consignor is obligated to pay I'd appreciate it.

I ballpark it as hammer = 100, seller gets 75, buyer pays 125. all the more reason to use the forum!

Well the pool of potential buyers is much smaller on these boards for high end works like those at 50k especially for an artist other than banksy.
Good deals can be had at auctions. Just do the math and know what pieces go for at primary.
And of course, auctions are sometimes the only option of the work is truly unique and you don't have access to one at primary ( or access to the artist).
For banksy prints I'm happy with the forum or ebay for most.
