Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ LONDON π¬π§, by aginghippie on Feb 15, 2008 3:43:10 GMT 1, Either Spotless was wildly under-estimated or Sothebys were not sure how to price Banksy. They got the Ruined Landscape pretty much smack on though.
At least Banksy now has an auction record in New York.

The thing I find interesting is that, given the results, the piece would likely have sold for more if it hadn't been defaced and just presented as the Hirst piece it originally was.

Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ LONDON π¬π§, by milleniumhut on Feb 15, 2008 8:43:15 GMT 1, So, is it a high price for a Banksy or a Low price for a Hirst? It's a high price for a Hanky.

What is the going rate for a Hirst dots thing?

Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ LONDON π¬π§, by Pattycakes on Feb 15, 2008 9:56:17 GMT 1, a spot painting of that size, I'd say about $2,000,000-3,000,000 so yes it's worth less with the Banksy on top of it, and I don't think really it can be seen as a record for a Banksy after all only half if it is his.

Awful song by the most over rated boy band in history... Bono's version can't have been as bad as the whining original
Good prices for the Banksy's though!

No but the Michael Jackson piece at SG2006 was a collab with Tom Ormond who is part of Hirst's studio.

Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ LONDON π¬π§, by mose on Feb 15, 2008 14:33:35 GMT 1, I think you are missing the point, it was entered as a Banksy piece and not a Damien Hirst piece. Damien Hirst collectors wouldn't have bought it as it was not a Damien Hirst piece.
No, I don't believe I am missing any point. Sotheby's made sure to advertise that it was an actual Hirst piece that had been vandalized, going as far as to show pictures of Hirst's mark/sig. It was well known.
Besides, I think you are generalizing Hirst collectors a bit too much to think that there isn't some base crossover and that this piece wouldn't appeal to them. Hirst, like Murakami, has rather broad appeal worldwide, from new-rich hedge fund managers to rappers to folks like Eli Broad.
