you make yourself sound like a p*ick the more you keep on bashing Laz

Sotheby's Art Auctions โข LONDON ๐ฌ๐ง, by bradpitt on Oct 18, 2008 18:50:12 GMT 1, Nothing against Laz, but it is a bit transparent, but who cares as it seems to be the way to get some recognition in the art world for some strange reason. I couldn't care less about how much something sells for, if it's poo it's poo. Not a lot of people think like this though as they are too absorbed with money. Shame. Damn, I sound like a hippy - I like money, but with art it has to be love.

Sotheby's Art Auctions โข LONDON ๐ฌ๐ง, by dogant on Oct 18, 2008 19:17:54 GMT 1, Graeme501,
As it was my post about the Laz show that got you thinking โ let me give you my views on your comments.
Think of it this way - You own some Banksy prints โ if you had to power to develop the market to insure your prints would increase I am sure you would do so? Laz has a vested interest in Banksy and like any businessperson โ will do what the feels is beneficial to his own stock and his artists (legally!).
None of us here at high enough up the ladder to know what goes on within the art world โ but we all must know that everything in our world is altered and manipulated to benefit someone and everything has a perceived value above someone elseโs perceived worth. Saying that, stating the Laz is buying a selling his own stock is very unfair and also potentially slanderous โ unless you can prove it.
Anyone wishing to join the Banksy club must now be influenced in not only the art, but also the financial gains this can bring. May I suggest that if you donโt like the ride โ you should get of the bus (but I can assure you any other bus will have the same problems!)
Itโs the way of the world โ we protect our own. I am sure you are intelligent enough to understand this and I would suggest you attempt to look at the positives of increased prices/media coverage etc, etc โ unless you want your favourite artists to go down the pan and pick up OGโs for ยฃ40 a pop.
And regarding the Bomb Middle England - the increase of ยฃ100k is IMO fair and only a stated price โ I guess there would be flex on this price and after all โ Laz has had ยฃ120,000+ tied up in BME for some time now. Add this to his overheads โ why not try to get ยฃ200k for it (in fact, is this not what happen with most BIN auctions on ebay?) But after seeing the total cost to put on a Laz party and the staffing costs/venue โ its only fair the man makes a living.
PS โ I think it was about 30 OGโs โ so I will amend my post!
Bloody hell โ that was another long one, sorry!
Finally, re SG08 - of course everyone is welcome - but be honest, they will be an elite club - there is an elite club with everything in life. Again, please smell the coffee.

Sotheby's Art Auctions โข LONDON ๐ฌ๐ง, by graeme501 on Oct 18, 2008 19:28:49 GMT 1, i agree with alot of what u r saying, and do have a very basic understanding of how the art world works, and how laz has a vested interest, and wants to keep up the price of banksy's work, but what happens when its only he that is willing to pay these high prices for the work at auction?
i dont think an 100k price increase is fair, if LAZ was the highest bidder, why would some1 want to pay double a few months later?
as for the slanderous comments, my instinct tells me that i wouldnt be surprised that he bought the queen vic, but as i have said, there is no fact behind me thinking this, just my thoughts, and will probably be proved incorrect sometime soon

Sotheby's Art Auctions โข LONDON ๐ฌ๐ง, by dogant on Oct 18, 2008 19:39:39 GMT 1, 1. He stock piles Banksy work and moves it on when the time is right (as all cash rich businesses would)
2. Why not, it's an asking price. Add that to the 120k investment he already has in it - as well as the other costs his business takes to run. Somewill will buy it for ยฃ200k - or he will sell for less and know one will know (no damage to market)
3. Who knows - not I!
And finally, I don't own a Banksy yet - so in a ideal world, Laz will f**k up big time - I can then buy cheap - Laz will get back on the ball - I will make some money!

Sotheby's Art Auctions โข LONDON ๐ฌ๐ง, by afroken on Nov 6, 2008 0:26:33 GMT 1, Skanky I think you are right that this is only the beginning. Many people think that urban art is a fad. I believe it signifies something much bigger: the handover of power (finally) from baby boomers to generation x-ers. There are people on this board and in the wider community of urban art lovers that will increasingly fill positions of power and importance in our society and their perspective on the world will replace attitudes of today to become the status quo. We are witnessing a significant cultural shift in all areas of the arts, technology and media as those retched baby boomers finally run out of steam and have no choice other than to make room for a new generation (even though that generation is already in its mid to late 30's). Our tastes will become the dominant force in this world and it's only a matter of time before they permeate everything. Our artists will be considered pioneers and people on boards like these will be wondering when their day glow video art installations will get a look in. That's what I think anyway!
Can I just resurrect this thread to say that, since I wrote this post, we have witnessed the end of baby boomer economics and today we witnessed the end of baby boomer politics. Culture and art WILL follow.

Those pieces were bought to be used for the lazarides extravaganza raffle as prizes, as were the failes. The event then turned into a show with works to be sold.

I have to do that with most of the art i have at home.

Considering Jeff Koons is the world's top selling living artist at auction, I find this thread amusing.

Sotheby's Art Auctions โข LONDON ๐ฌ๐ง, by pezlow on Feb 4, 2009 7:45:24 GMT 1, I kinda agree with Stickee on this. I've never got koons at all. Sure his work sells for big bucks but beyond that what is it all about? Koons seems to have ridden a wave of hype to get where he is today - the marriage to the italian porn star come politician, the sculpture showing them having sex, the pink panther masterbation fantasy thing. I just don't get it AT ALL.

As for Stickee's comment,
"I think a lot of it if you had on display at your house you would have to tell people "its a Koons" and maybe hand them a leaflet about the guy
know what I mean?"
Even if you handed people a leaflet about your work, they still wouldnt know who you are, at least Koons does a bit more than produce works of some three eyed dude, I wonder how many people understand that!!

Nope of course not but if you don't understand it and it doesn't do much for you personally then you aren't gonna get it. And with Koons I just don't get it. And while I can see that Koons has very high production values and that the stuff he produces looks nice (including those balloon dogs) that's about as far as I can personally go with it.
Agree about the hype comment but maybe because I don't really get the work the hype just seems more obvious to me than say Banksy or Hirst.

Sotheby's Art Auctions โข LONDON ๐ฌ๐ง, by lee3 on Feb 5, 2009 20:19:50 GMT 1, Through 6, everything has sold. I'm surprised the Fontana did not bring in more and gosh you have to wonder if it would have brought in 2 or 3 times that much just 6 months ago.
I'm keeping my eye on lot 13 as that is so beautiful to me.
through 10 everything has sold but many obviosly lowered reserves as the prices without premium in some cases are well below the low estimate.
Through 13, everything has sold. "only" 892k GBP for 3 Warhol Fright Wigs which is $1.3M total. The last 12 inch fright wig at auction that I can remember was a gold one in November '07 which "only" brought in $1.7M. I was sitting in the audience for that one. A red one and an orange one had brought in $2.3 and $2.8M the previous May. So, we've gone from $2.8M for a 12 inch version of this image to $400k which is an 85% erosion in price. This correction which was long overdue is significantly nastier than I expected. I envy the buyer of that lot because they got a steal not that I could afford that anyway. It also means that certain Warhol's have come back in the range that I've been hoping for.
The scary thing is that this is just the beginning and art isn't going to just run away from us. Buyers market for the forseeable future (my guess is 5 years at least) so that is the silver lining.
Sale is over and the Fright Wigs are the only lot that brought in above the high estimate. Shockingly to me, the piece I would have wanted the most in this auction (after the Fright Wigs) if money were no object is the only one that was bought in. How in the world does that Lichtenstein not get $1.8M while that Koons brings in $2.8M? Manipu... well maybe there are a lot of people who just can't resist a wooden scultpure of farm animals at $4 million dollars.
I don't get it.
