Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ LONDON π¬π§, by funster on Oct 17, 2008 20:34:52 GMT 1, Funster change the title to great result for Banksy !
I agree, after the 2nd result things certainly looked up. Interesting that Pezlow mentioned on the other thread the quality of the Kate's was below standard, this must have had an effect.

Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ LONDON π¬π§, by afroken on Oct 17, 2008 20:37:13 GMT 1, This really demonstrates how little attention is paid to Dreweatts in the contemporary art world. Bonhams will be interesting.

Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ LONDON π¬π§, by lee3 on Oct 17, 2008 20:38:50 GMT 1, >>> The Kate's didn't sell but the condition of some of them wasn't great - one had a dirty great crease<<<
Pez, did you see this in the flesh or was that something you heard? I'm stunned that Sotheby's would offer any print set in an evening sale that wasn't pristine. We're talking the best of the best here, that's pretty surprising to me if so as it was the only collection of prints offered in the sale. Christie's is offering a set of Warhol Mao's in their evening sale so those are the only 2 artist's that either house welcomed in that format which that alone should be a strong indication of their condition.

Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ LONDON π¬π§, by skanky on Oct 17, 2008 20:43:37 GMT 1, Monetary value aside apart from possibly the Warhols there is nothing in that sale that I would choose over a good Faile , Micallef, Parla, Neate or Os G. That alone gives me more confidence than any result.

Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ LONDON π¬π§, by Heavyconsumer on Oct 17, 2008 20:45:49 GMT 1, Is it only me who thinks that Β£250,000 as a low estimate is a bit high? I know that they have sold individually at astronomical prices over the past year, but print prices do seem to be getting lower across the board, not higher. No doom and gloom imo, just a very optimistic estimate in this climate. And I agree with Hlarmy, there must be positives to take from Banksy prints even appearing in this sale. Are there many living artists whose prints end up there? (genuine question)

I've been following contemorary art for a long time and never even heard of them until that first street sale a few months ago.

Then you are buying what you love which is great, though i would caution you to take another look at both of these and reconsider. The first because Klein's life was cut way too short and he was miles ahead of most "inventing" international klein blue, covering naked women in said paint and having them roll or jump onto paper or canvases to arrive at many of his compositions. The second because without him, I wonder whether or not we would even know about the artists you listed.

Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ LONDON π¬π§, by skanky on Oct 17, 2008 21:21:28 GMT 1, I always enjoy your posts Lee and find them very informative, in the past you have turned me towards Villegle in a big way. I can honestly say I've not yet seen a Basquiat that has grabbed me but understand the historical importance of the work. I will do a bit of research into Klein. Its just the doom and gloom thats been getting me a bit lately. I will never forget the first time I walked into the Neate PPP exhibition it blew me away, somehow I find the work of our artists more relevant and I still believe we are in the middle of something that will be remembered. There is too much emphasis on short term results from auctions and ebay etc, imo the quality of the work speaks for itself.

Good post Skanky - and I agree with everything you said. Lee's posts are always ones I look out for as his knowledge of art goes a long way past the 'urban' scene, which is one thing that I think is missing on the forum

Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ LONDON π¬π§, by afroken on Oct 17, 2008 21:40:30 GMT 1, Skanky I think you are right that this is only the beginning. Many people think that urban art is a fad. I believe it signifies something much bigger: the handover of power (finally) from baby boomers to generation x-ers. There are people on this board and in the wider community of urban art lovers that will increasingly fill positions of power and importance in our society and their perspective on the world will replace attitudes of today to become the status quo. We are witnessing a significant cultural shift in all areas of the arts, technology and media as those retched baby boomers finally run out of steam and have no choice other than to make room for a new generation (even though that generation is already in its mid to late 30's). Our tastes will become the dominant force in this world and it's only a matter of time before they permeate everything. Our artists will be considered pioneers and people on boards like these will be wondering when their day glow video art installations will get a look in.
That's what I think anyway!

Now that is a bitch. I am lucky in that I started picking stuff up in early 06 so I really wasn't there at the beginning. Otherwise, I would be kicking myself. Great, great canvas.

Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ LONDON π¬π§, by afroken on Oct 17, 2008 22:33:19 GMT 1, Thanks man. I think I was very lucky. I remember nothing sold that night apart from the prints. Crazy really. I had an even better opportunity to buy a huge vandalised canvas at the Cargo show earlier that year, and procrastinated for ages over spending Β£500. I passed in the end. I kick myself for that one. It was stunning.
I don't have a photo of the flower thrower on my wall foolishly, but it's still on the Andipa site:
www.andipamodern.com/DET/DET-4264.HTM
I did buy another large piece with 3 Laugh Now monkeys some time later but that's gone now too I miss that one

Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ LONDON π¬π§, by pezlow on Oct 17, 2008 22:35:34 GMT 1, >>> The Kate's didn't sell but the condition of some of them wasn't great - one had a dirty great crease<<< Pez, did you see this in the flesh or was that something you heard? I'm stunned that Sotheby's would offer any print set in an evening sale that wasn't pristine. We're talking the best of the best here, that's pretty surprising to me if so as it was the only collection of prints offered in the sale. Christie's is offering a set of Warhol Mao's in their evening sale so those are the only 2 artist's that either house welcomed in that format which that alone should be a strong indication of their condition.
Yup saw them in person. There was a significant crease on the border of one and a couple of the others had smaller dints. This showed up quite significantly because they were framed in perspex. Bear in mind though that these prints were editions of 20 so it is extremely rare to offer a set of them for auction.

Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ LONDON π¬π§, by afroken on Oct 17, 2008 22:52:43 GMT 1, I remember finding out what it was worth one day and after 6 years of being mis-handled it suddenly took on a life of its own. It actually made me feel paranoid having it in my house. When I was tarting it around trying to sell it, I suddenly remembered when I was over the other side of town that I had left it in the back of my car. I dropped everything and grabbed a cab across town to rescue it. I was panicking the whole way there! Weird feeling owning something so small of that value.
EDIT: the day I found out what it was worth was when I found this forum and posted it. I got bombarded with low ball offers that were much higher than I thought it was worth. Luckily I decided to investigate!

Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ LONDON π¬π§, by afroken on Oct 17, 2008 23:23:09 GMT 1, That is my now 6 year old indeed, but not my now ex-wife!
Another funny story is that I wanted to buy a friend a signed Banksy print years ago as a birthday present. My (now ex) wife said I was being selfish as it was the kind of thing I would want but he would hate it. She forbade me from buying it. I told him the story recently and he didn't even raise a smile!

Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ LONDON π¬π§, by junkieart on Oct 17, 2008 23:46:50 GMT 1, Nice story, thanks for sharing it with us, cheers afroken. I'm the same but not on the same level, I've had my B's since 03, they were put in ordinary frames at the time and hung casually around the house to enjoy. Then about 2 years ago realized they were worth a small fortune (to me) and I turned paraniod (when leaving for holidays/work anytime really) about them being nicked etc. Which I in a strange way I started to enjoy them less. For me the more they were worth, the more I was scared about losing them. Very odd? I think somethings you can loose the art for there value? Unless your minted, which I'm not! I still love my 03 signed prints but they do worry me, am I the only one? Peace JA

Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ LONDON π¬π§, by junkieart on Oct 18, 2008 0:04:00 GMT 1, Its crazy isn't it, I brought all the B's because I loved them, as I'm sure you did back in the day. And then they become a bind, I don't like to put them on my walls (although they are but no sun, no smoke etc etc), I have to admit had a signed HAND in my down stairs WC for years (Its still A1, if i come to sell it on here ;-) )And my signed QV (numbered lower than 4) in my hall, and the WSM in my living room. Then I found out they could be worth 10's of thousands I thought great and fuck at the same time. There still on my walls but behind museum glass and fully insured. I thing sometimes the money over takes the art. Which is great if you want to sell it, but I love my first B's but they do cause me worry. I know its a nice problem to have but when you don't expect it its a strange problem to have. Peace JA
