Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ LONDON π¬π§, by lee3 on Oct 20, 2008 17:19:46 GMT 1, Every Banksy in the Stoheby's day sale found a buyer. Banksy "Bad meaning good" also did well at 26,250 (i think). Some Faile's hammered, others did not. Still, there is a trend emerging as most of the sales are selling about 60% of their lots though only managing to bring in about 50 to 75% of the low estimate for the sales totals (Christie's and Sotheby's that is as PdP fared much worse) and just about everything with an agressive estimate is being passed over. There were some mega price tag works in the evening sales that didn't find buyers which is the biggest factor in the short fall on the money side. Quality work is finding buyers in the mid range of fair estimates. It hasn't been a strong week for Warhol though many of these had very agressive estimates. R Prince is having a good week as is Hirst.

Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ LONDON π¬π§, by Tiki on Oct 20, 2008 23:29:22 GMT 1, I went to see it all whilst down there at the weekend in the open viewing. If im honest i didn't think to much of the banksy's. The faile's they had though were mind blowing. The temptation to grab and run away with the 'mirror mirror' piece was certainly there.

Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ LONDON π¬π§, by jamesreeve5 on Oct 30, 2008 2:38:18 GMT 1, gbh, thanks for the video link
credit crunch = great artwork going up for sale. The best investment these days however might be Sotheby's stock, off a high of $57 and hovering between 8 and 9 dollars a share.

Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ LONDON π¬π§, by afroken on Nov 6, 2008 0:26:33 GMT 1, Skanky I think you are right that this is only the beginning. Many people think that urban art is a fad. I believe it signifies something much bigger: the handover of power (finally) from baby boomers to generation x-ers. There are people on this board and in the wider community of urban art lovers that will increasingly fill positions of power and importance in our society and their perspective on the world will replace attitudes of today to become the status quo. We are witnessing a significant cultural shift in all areas of the arts, technology and media as those retched baby boomers finally run out of steam and have no choice other than to make room for a new generation (even though that generation is already in its mid to late 30's). Our tastes will become the dominant force in this world and it's only a matter of time before they permeate everything. Our artists will be considered pioneers and people on boards like these will be wondering when their day glow video art installations will get a look in. That's what I think anyway!
Can I just resurrect this thread to say that, since I wrote this post, we have witnessed the end of baby boomer economics and today we witnessed the end of baby boomer politics. Culture and art WILL follow.

Those pieces were bought to be used for the lazarides extravaganza raffle as prizes, as were the failes. The event then turned into a show with works to be sold.

I think a lot of it if you had on display at your house you would have to tell people "its a Koons" and maybe hand them a leaflet about the guy know what I mean?
I have to do that with most of the art i have at home.

Considering Jeff Koons is the world's top selling living artist at auction, I find this thread amusing.

Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ LONDON π¬π§, by pezlow on Feb 4, 2009 7:45:24 GMT 1, I kinda agree with Stickee on this. I've never got koons at all. Sure his work sells for big bucks but beyond that what is it all about? Koons seems to have ridden a wave of hype to get where he is today - the marriage to the italian porn star come politician, the sculpture showing them having sex, the pink panther masterbation fantasy thing. I just don't get it AT ALL.

Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ LONDON π¬π§, by loucastel on Feb 4, 2009 10:26:51 GMT 1, C'mon Pez do you really understand all the art you like, sometimes it's just down to an individual image, as for the hype, seems thats the way with most artists these days!!
As for Stickee's comment,
"I think a lot of it if you had on display at your house you would have to tell people "its a Koons" and maybe hand them a leaflet about the guy
know what I mean?"
Even if you handed people a leaflet about your work, they still wouldnt know who you are, at least Koons does a bit more than produce works of some three eyed dude, I wonder how many people understand that!!

Nope of course not but if you don't understand it and it doesn't do much for you personally then you aren't gonna get it. And with Koons I just don't get it. And while I can see that Koons has very high production values and that the stuff he produces looks nice (including those balloon dogs) that's about as far as I can personally go with it.
Agree about the hype comment but maybe because I don't really get the work the hype just seems more obvious to me than say Banksy or Hirst.
