Who's behind the Banksy market rise? (Is it Geismar?), by postexpress on Sept 29, 2020 2:01:07 GMT 1, Ok, so I'm a new art collector, and some of my banker friends recommended this forum to me to learn more collecting art. Great reads so far, thanks to everyone here! One question I have is: who do you think is the mastermind behind the rapid rise of Banksy prices this year?
I mean, with COVID, of course, a lot of new cash hoarders are piling into alternative assets such as art, but for Banksy to frequently have above ยฃ1,000,000 prices for paintings, someone big is definitely jacking up the prices and doing some behind-the-scene works, I'm way to familiar with such maneuvers in the stock market with meme stocks like TSLA and NKLA, some major hedge funds are out there making a killing with misinformation pumps...
My banker friends and I have been poking around several dealers and galleries we buy from, and everyone has their own theories, but one name popped out quite often: Raphael Geismar, if I spelled that right.
Is anyone familiar with this Geismar dude? Is he a major whale with many works from Banksy, and I also heard he owns a shit load of stuff from KAWS and Invader...
If so, that'll be someone very inspiring for me as that's basically running the cheat codes in the art market, these moves will be so controversial in the financial market. Are these moves doable in the financial market? Yes, but will require some very detailed and sophisticated planning...
I hope to hear some insightful thoughts from you guys.

Who's behind the Banksy market rise? (Is it Geismar?), by LJCal on Sept 29, 2020 2:40:30 GMT 1, Dude, the official line is that there is no market manipulation and itโs simply the effect of new collectors jumping on the bandwagon because the art is so desirable everyone must have it. What youโre doing is basically like telling a child Santa isnโt real and some of the children on here will get very upset with you.

Who's behind the Banksy market rise? (Is it Geismar?), by acaipride on Sept 29, 2020 2:48:45 GMT 1, Different players/new money in these covid times.. A lot of illicit funds are easily washable in these times thanks to many banks loosening their security protocols to prevent financial catastrophe ( have a Google search at the latest findings)..through diff levels of washing you can have a great deal of your illicit or under the table funds back at a minimal turnover percentage. This is just one of the many players pumping up the entire art market. Artists themselves will do this as well, invested groups in the artists will do this themselves, it is just not one player.. This all of course is nothing new Post, it is just apparently easier and more do-able in these times.. That's the little I know, and I know close to really nothing ๐๐๐ Btw, I could of sworn you were a member on here already and seasoned art collector, maybe it was another Post.

What area of banking are you and your friends in?
Are you friends with the same bankers who used to post regularly in the early 2000s boasting of their ยฃ500 Banksy flips. They played a blinder dumping their art just before the market crash.

Who's behind the Banksy market rise? (Is it Geismar?), by nex on Sept 29, 2020 9:55:57 GMT 1, my hot take is the market is incredible sensitive to fluctuation, over the last year this forum has normalised auction results as the new private price. Private sales have all been based on these, with little transparency to the reality of these sales after the event. Various posters have continually reinforced this, whilst those owning the pieces have been more than happy to pile in, in agreement / celebration at these new prices.
So with all the above in mind, all it really takes, is a few 'big' print sales at auction to then be amplified, with word of mouth getting to those late to the party but well heeled to keep the trend going....

It's organised crime money and money laundering. Banksy will definitely crash in value after this becomes common knowledge. Geismar are just small fry.

Who's behind the Banksy market rise? (Is it Geismar?), by pr.yu on Sept 29, 2020 10:47:30 GMT 1, I'm not sure why everyone thinks this is just the Banksy market. The entire collectibles market is blowing up. Sports cards, autographs, memorabilia are all selling for ridiculous sums. I don't think there is some collective out there doing this all at the same time. I know this board is dominated by people overseas, but a baseball card from a player STILL PLAYING sold for over $3M USD a few weeks ago. And cards from baseball, basketball and football players who are very early in their careers are regularly selling for 10s and evens 100s of thousands of dollars. I think it's a combination of things: (1) available cash at very low interest rates, (2) men in their mid 40s finally with significant disposable income and feelings of nostalgia, (3) diversification of investment portfolios for individuals, (4) the thought in the back of your head that you can perhaps get around the tax man if you're careful.
