I would suggest the opposite and have an inkling that in a few years time this will be seen as a bargain.
I do agree that 7M for a this piece is a great price all considering. However itโs historically always been originals that set the market, not prints. Prints are outpacing originals in rising prices at the moment, and thatโs not normal or probably healthy. Who in their right mind is spending 1M on a print of which over a hundred exist between different editions, when originals are going for less than 10x?
Yes good point, it does seem pretty ludicrous when put that way. I wonder what an original stencil GWRB would go for today. Andipa have one for sale.

It would seem that originals (especially those at the lower end) are seriously undervalued.
can you still get an original for ยฃ200k anymore? Surely not.

Totally agree.... the difference in terms of price with a GWRB does not equal the real difference between the two artworks

ยฃ1m buys them the status they crave without bankrupting them.
Iโm sure those collectors do exist, but it seems to more likely to me, the buyer was either super wealthy and didnโt want to lose the print, or market manipulation. Anyone spending a million on art should be knowledgeable enough of their artists market, comps, editions etc or be paying someone who does, not to buy something at such a poor comparable value.

www.google.com/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/2015/11/18/arts/international/with-modigliani-purchase-chinese-billionaire-liu-yiqian-dreams-of-bigger-canvas.amp.html
There is a documentary where a Japanese buyer bought a 83 mil basquait and he knew nothing of the artist and in the same documentary a buyer buys a 2 mill canvas without know any history of the artist as he just wanted to buy something
The super rich will regain their purchase costs with in a few months through their business profits
A lot are impulse buys , hard to imagine with that kind of money!

Yep.
Itโs called a Swiss freeport.

Beyond those few single prints are some sets of Warhols, there certainly isn't a single Warhol at the 1m level. I'm pretty certain that the next Gold GWB a.p. will hit $1m.

Sotheby's Art Auctions โข HONG KONG ๐ญ๐ฐ, by Viscount Jerkoff on Oct 6, 2020 17:44:28 GMT 1, I think the sheer size of the piece actually devalues it as there won't be many walls collectors have that will be big enough. Show Me The Monet should easily surpass this result. Keep seeing people writing this - it wont as the person buying it probably lives in a massive house. They dont live in a flat in hackney thats for sure. stop worrying about it.
Seeing it in person, there really are not many places with ceilings that high. It certainly limited the pool of buyers I think. Show me the Monet is beautiful and big and very wall friendly, i e over that to go for over ยฃ10mil.

My interpretation of badcollector's post is that it was knowing, a humorous commentary on the skill set of Martin Whatson.
First, it made me chuckle. But shortly afterwards I realised the stained glass windows by the schoolchildren were actually more interesting and also better executed than any work I've seen by Whatson himself.
A moment of melancholy ensued.
