Mason Storm ๐ฌ๐ง New Print Release โข Who is Mason Storm?, by sandinista on Sept 16, 2022 8:18:36 GMT 1, So referring to the you tube vid. Does he say he paints the original rembrandt piece which is what i query or is he admitting to adding something to an old master in photoshop and doing an inkjet print? I can't believe someone who supposedly paints the monkey Parliament pieces is the same person putting spaceships on old paintings

Mason Storm ๐ฌ๐ง New Print Release โข Who is Mason Storm?, by bokonon on Nov 8, 2022 8:11:50 GMT 1, Well, I guess I buy turds, fizzy. Guessing that you're not the current ยฃ3,000 bid on his Test Choppers in the Tate Ward auction?
Let me start by saying I own several works by Mason and they're absolutely fantastic. He was also awesome to deal with and is a truly nice guy. His oil paintings are incredible in their execution, something that has been echoed to me by every person in the art world I know who have seen the ones I have. He is quite honestly a current day master in that medium. I also have a couple of his antiques, which are fun and which I love.
Content is a matter of opinion and to each his own. You like it or you don't. You connect with it or you don't. You don't, then maybe you just keep your mouth shut or share your negative opinion as just that, your opinion, and with a little civility. I tend to gravitate toward his more subtle work and not so much ones like the last ones posted in this thread, but that doesn't mean they're bad or that he's a bad artist or that people that like those particular works are idiots.
Pretty sure I nailed the fifteen words.

It's ok that you like them, it's also ok that for you the work is subjectively "good" and that you find the MS "phenomenon" interesting, regardless of whether everything about the work, the gallery and not least the inane myth building "phenomenon", in a visual art context, is objectively bad and very, very cringe. Civil enough?

Mason Storm ๐ฌ๐ง New Print Release โข Who is Mason Storm?, by bokonon on Nov 8, 2022 18:43:30 GMT 1, Nah, didn't touch a nerve, but on reread I see how it came across that way. So I'm actually really interested in this. Three sets of pictures below. Interested in your thoughts on each set. Do you like one more than the other? Is one in each set better than the other in (a) your opinion and/or (b) in a visual art context, as Reader references ? For anyone to answer, and I'm not trying to set this up as an I told you so or anything like that, I'm genuinely interested in objective takes on each pair. Apologies for picture formatting, not sure exactly how they'll come through.
Set One
Set Two
Set Three
I look forward to everyone's analysis and opinions. Thanks.

Mason Storm ๐ฌ๐ง New Print Release โข Who is Mason Storm?, by Reader on Nov 8, 2022 19:39:36 GMT 1, Possibly that the top set are all pale imitations of Banksy's poorest works? so poorer than poor. Reminds me of the banksy riff on the "you told that joke twice" canvas.

Apologies for picture formatting, not sure exactly how they'll come through. Set One Set Two Set Three I look forward to everyone's analysis and opinions. Thanks. 1A - whoever painted it has added a random smiley face to the background. Means nothing and poorly done. 1B - Banksy has taken a classical style painting and modified it with google eyes. Simple, amusing and would make a statement in a museum type setting.
2A - whoever painted this has added a Banksy motif in the background, again makes no sense and is meaningless. 2B - Banksy spin on a classic style painting with cutouts for photography opportunity. Again simple but also interactive.
3A - whoever has painted it has added two characters to a classical painting, it would be much stronger with just the shark fin but that would also be a copy of Banksyโs work, so alas they once again throw anything at it until all meaning is lost. 3B - admiringly one of the weaker Banksy modified paintings, but still well executed with one central focal point and makes you think.

Mason Storm ๐ฌ๐ง New Print Release โข Who is Mason Storm?, by fuzzed on Nov 8, 2022 20:42:40 GMT 1, I just had a read through the latest posts in this thread and it serves as a bit of a reminder as to why I don't really come to this forum as much anymore, and perhaps why it feels so dead most of the time, except for affiliate eBay links being promoted on most threads.
We seem to be being asked to critique some unoriginal work against the reference pieces? There's literally no comparison, the latter just look like re-hashed ideas and have little meaning.

Mason Storm ๐ฌ๐ง New Print Release โข Who is Mason Storm?, by bokonon on Nov 8, 2022 21:02:52 GMT 1, Alright, donnerz, thank you for contributing. Some good points. My follow up questions to your analysis:
Set One:
- What meaning do googly eyes have that the smiley face doesn't that makes it museum worthy while the other is garbage? What is it that is poorly done? Both are original oil paintings done by the artist, both add a modern element to a vintage-style painting which project very opposite sentiments as the subject?
- You clearly recognize 1B as a Banksy, as it has been in the public eye before. What if I told you that 1A was done by the same artist? What if 1A was done before 1B? Would it change your analysis? Same questions to ask in the remaining sets as well. All purely hypothetical of course.
Set Two:
- I really feel like you could switch it around and make similar arguments. 2A - Banksy spin on a classic style painting juxtaposing one of his modern-day, iconic images against a historical backdrop. Simple, but thought provoking, what would that scene look like today? 2B - whoever painted this has added a Banksy motif (the cone) to the painting, and then cut the heads out so people could take pictures with it, makes no sense and is meaningless. The detail is also lacking in the primary picture compared to the other.
Set Three:
- Given that the shark fin is Banksy's as you say, I'm very interested in your take on the Set Four.
- Does a cartoon monkey drinking gasoline on a tree branch along a dirt road really make you think more than a cartoon cat diving in a stream with a shark in it? Both have comparable focal points, the additions, and both involve cartoons endangering their lives. I'm interested in why that's the case?
That said, answer or don't, but thank you for at least going through it and analyzing each work. Much appreciated. There is no right and wrong.
Fuzzed, welcome to the party. And I agree, sometimes its hard to look at this forum, mainly because people say they want meaningful discussion, but really they just want to project their biases through vitriol to everyone else. Would you say that Banksy's iconic rat is unoriginal work and can't be compared against Blek le Rat's work?
That's it for me. I'm really not trying to prove anything here, just wish for more open minds and real discussion. I like the artist(s?), and just like any artist I like some of their works and don't like others as much. It's odd to me that so many Banksy fans (of which I am one) hate those inspired by him, when Banksy was inspired by Blek's rats and used those. It's not like any of these artists inspired by Banksy are absolutely crushing it by selling their art.
Anyway, thanks.
