It's depends on goodwill from him and publisher, that's seems to be announce 4000 for a first edition. The question is why only 4000 copies and no more ? There is an second edition ? I don't have answer. Have you found out how many copies you have been allowed yet Denis?
I'm going to be really upset if you haven't regulated sales based on your stock and I just passed on this from source.
The second edition will most likely be a soft cover, if anything and not right away.

d: he is buying books from the publisher same as fnac, amazon, and all the other bookstores selling it. Do you think he's getting hundreds of copies on the black market?

Don’t worry, 4000 is a lot.
Second edition ( Invader made that gif Paris catalog ) are never in soft cover.
