Many of the selected exhibits are hidden treasures: pieces from private collections that have rarely – if ever – been shown in public before. As part of the most comprehensive Gerhard Richter exhibition in Germany for over ten years, these works provide an insight into the entire spectrum of his art – from his beginnings in the early 1960s to more recent times.

The exhibition focuses on the Rhineland as the perfect setting for the evolution of Gerhard Richter’s oeuvre following his move from Dresden in 1961. It was here that he met other like-minded artists such as Sigmar Polke and Günther Uecker, role models and provocative figures like Joseph Beuys, and eventually the curious and enterprising community of collectors that had formed around the emerging galleries in Düsseldorf and Cologne.”

Thanks to a delayed flight, I got the chance to visit the Gerhard Richter exhibition at Kunst Palast.
Amazing pieces... though it was a bit overcrowded since it was the opening weekend!

When I quickly scanned your post and saw the first two green squares, I initially thought they might be painter's tape, to create a deliberately-rudimentary hanging aesthetic. A bit like Wolfgang Tillmans and his bulldog clips.

The last Richter solo exhibition I attended was already over a decade ago — Gerhard Richter: Panorama at Tate Modern in 2011.

Near the entrance to that show, I recall bumping into Conor Harrington and Chloe Early. And then, immediately afterwards, thinking how it made perfect sense to see them there, given their own respective styles and use of paint‑smearing techniques.

What drives you to validate one result and invalidate the other? That sale was in August of 2023. The Phillips sale in January of this year will have had a greater effect of seasonality, but it is more recent, and prices are changing faster than people think. The Sotheby’s sale benefited from being closer to an in-season sale, and it’s one of the big two. But there is really no way anyone is going to pay that much now unless they’re rich and ignorant.

If you’re after one “for a sensible price” your only real option is auction, as sellers still haven’t adjusted their expectations. This is notable given his age, and an expected surge in demand and prices when the time comes. After all, he’s certainly expecting it given that his move to Zwirner was essentially an agreement to handle his estate. I’d recommend watching the December auctions, as any time proximal to Christmas is associated with dreadful results.
