Adam Pendleton ๐บ๐ธ New Print Release โข Exhibition News, by Riotcops on Oct 6, 2021 19:39:01 GMT 1, If like to read that but donโt have an artnet account - any chance of a copy and paste? I don't either but copied from the source code:
Adam Pendleton is the man behind, arguably, the largest and most ambitious visual art project in the city at the moment: Three 60-foot-tall black scaffold structures displaying paintings, drawings, and film in the soaring atrium of the Museum of Modern Art. The immersive work explores themes of Blackness, identity, and abstraction.
Who Is Queen, it bursts into the temple of Modernism, at once a disruption and an homage. Its black and white imagery of text-based paintings and documentary footage of Civil Rights protests and the <a href="https://news.artnet.com/art-world/robert-e-lee-statue-removed-2006629" recently dismantled monument to general Robert E. Lee</a> flickers as you ascend the floors and travel further back in art history. The soundtrack, which includes recordings of poet Amiri Baraka, Black Lives Matter protests, and the music of Jace Clayton (aka DJ Rapture), ricochets among paintings by Pollock and Picasso in the normally hushed galleries.
The MoMA piece is the culmination of the past decade for Pendleton, a conceptual artist with a disciplined approach to his practice and prices. Its visibility and scale are likely to push the artistโs career and market to new levelsโwhile testing his ability to control both
โTo have MoMA in your corner is powerful,โ said adviser Wendy Cromwell, who has placed three paintings by Pendleton with her clients in the past two years. โItโs a game-changer for artists in their careers. It helps validate the existing market. It has a potential to raise prices in the future.โ
Pendleton, a native of Richmond, Virginia, is a bit of a conundrum. Only 37, he has spent two decades exhibiting widely around the world. His supporters include Whitney Museum director of curatorial affairs Adrienne Edwards, whose conversations with Pendleton formed the foundation for <em>Who Is Queen</em>, and Laura Hoptman, who invited Pendleton to participate in significant group exhibitions during her tenure at the New Museum and, later, MoMA.
But while his works are collected by Steve Cohen, Laurene Powell Jobs, Venus Williams, and Leonardo DiCaprio, Pendleton hasnโt had a solo gallery show in New York since 2014, and there isnโt a frenzied secondary market for his work. His $262,812 auction record was set two years ago at an auction for a nonprofit organization. Meanwhile, works by younger artists, with much shorter and less illustrious careers, have sold for many times that sum.
Unlike colorful figurative paintings by Black artists, which have ignited speculative trading in recent years, Pendleton occupies a more austere and heady space. In a recent profile, Pendleton <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/09/10/arts/design/adam-pendleton-moma-who-is-queen.html" โIโm fine with being misunderstood. You can see it in my workโthese fields of stuttering language. Itโs a refusal, but itโs an invitation at the same time.
Stuart Comer, MoMA’s chief curator of media and performance, calls Pendleton a rigorous thinker about politics, poetry, and gender theory. โItโs all there,โ Comer said. โItโs this incredibly rich and broad intellectual spectrum that finds outlets to be activated within the work.โ
Pendletonโs closest analogue might be Rashid Johnson, who <a href="https://news.artnet.com/art-world/rashid-johnson-post-black-pleasure-town-640166" target="_blank" rel="noopener">has been classified</a> as a conceptual, “post-Black” artist and also works across several mediums. However, Johnsonโs work trades regularly on the secondary market, and earlier this year he achieved an auction high of $1.95 million at Christie’s for a painting, <em>Anxious Red Painting December 18th</em>, created during the pandemic and sold to raise money for a nonprofit.
The lack of auction heat around Pendleton โmay be because heโs not interested in collaborating with luxury brands and fashion houses, or in being a DJ,โ said Alexander Gray, an art dealer and Pendletonโs friend of 18 years. โItโs about the art. He really controls how much work goes out of the studio. He doesnโt want to be a vehicle for speculation.โ

It could also be a result of his focus on art, rather than on the market. Instead of feeding the beast, Pendleton often says no to distractions. At 16, he refused to get a driverโs license because he was too busy painting in the basement. In recent years, heโs said no to dealers asking him to make more paintings, charge higher prices, and do high-profile exhibitions. He even said no to New York City, moving upstate for several years in his 20s
This uncommon talent for saying โnoโ is the result of Pendletonโs clarity and determination, said Edwards, his friend of more than a decade. Pendleton isnโt someone to hit the gala circuit or spend summers in the Hamptons.
โWith that clarity you kind of know what fits and what doesnโt,โ she said. โWhatโs going to be helpful to you and whatโs not. Adam makes art because thatโs what he has to do. He turns to literature and poetry because thatโs what feeds him. The โnoโ has to do with a determination to reserve that place for himself.โ
Pendleton declined to comment for this column, but issued a statement: โArt is a slow process that demands time and attention. Iโm not an artist for 10 years, but for the rest of my life.โ</p>
This kind of deliberation can be a headache for his dealers.
Pendleton makes โa painfully small number of paintings,โ according to Marc Glimcher, president of Pace, the mega-gallery that has been working with him since 2012. โWe might have a year where we get to have a show or two, so maybe there are 15 to 17 paintings,โ he said. โSome years it’s less than that.โ
Painting is only one aspect of Pendletonโs practice, which also includes performance and writing. All are rooted in his theory of Black Dada, which draws parallels between artistic response to the trauma of World War I in Europe and to racism in the U.S. He developed it in his 20s while leading a nearly monastic existence in Germantown, New York.
The market, however, is mostly interested in the paintings, and those take a long time to make. His process involves numerous stages and revisions, with spray painting, photography, and silk-screening.
โMaybe one out of three is acceptable to him,โ Glimcher said. โHe knows exactly what he needs to do, exactly how many paintings he needs to make. And it’s never in response to the marketโwhich is very healthy, but a little frustrating for the collectors.โ Prices for paintings start around $200,000 and go to $600,000 for a 20-foot mural similar to the one at MoMA, Glimcher said. (A work by the artist also sold for $333,000 <a href="https://news.artnet.com/market/loic-gouzer-fair-warning-1889450" target="_blank" rel="noopener">on Loรฏc Gouzer’s Fair Warning app</a> last year.)
<div id="attachment_872942" style="width: 1010px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-full wp-image-872942" src="https://news.artnet.com/app/news-upload/2017/02/170223_KW_Pendleton_0195-Bearbeitet_LQ.jpg" alt="Adam Pendleton, Installation view of "shot him in the face" at KW Institute for Contemporary Art, 2017. Los Angeles dealer David Kordanksy got only nine paintings, an installation, and a film for Pendletonโs first solo show with the gallery last year. Everything sold. โFrom the marketโs perspective, he would probably be perceived as an under-producer,โ Kordansky said. โItโs โslow and steady wins the raceโ with him.โ
The tight control has repressed auction sales, according to Cromwell. With his MoMA show, Pendleton is on the knife edge of critical darling and market star, and there are signs he is shifting to meet the moment. In the lead-up to <em>Who Is Queen</em>, he began trickling out a new body of work, less austere than his earlier Black Dada paintings, with spray-painted text and more evidence of the artistโs hand. These, says Cromwell, โhave dramatically increased the audience for his work.โ
Of course, the very qualities that keep Pendletonโs market on a low simmer instead of a fast boil are the ones that make possible a work as complex and long-gestating as <em>Who Is Queen</em>. It required vacillating from solitary research to collaboration with a team of 20 people, including an architect, cinematographer, and composer, not to mention a small army of fabricators and art handlers.
โI’ve never worked with anybody quite like Adam,โ said MoMAโs Comer. โHe’s unbelievably focused. He lives his life with care and purpose and he produces his art with care and purpose.โ

Adam Pendleton ๐บ๐ธ New Print Release โข Exhibition News, by irl1 on Oct 7, 2021 14:15:30 GMT 1, Not clear if the print is signed/numbered "Untitled (masks), 2020 is a new signed limited edition silkscreen print by visionary contemporary artist Adam Pendleton." Doesn't it mean the print is signed? Pace Prints is pleased to announce a new edition by Adam Pendleton. Untitled (WHO IS QUEEN?) (2021) will be released to coincide with the exhibition "Adam Pendleton: Who Is Queen?" at the Museum of Modern Art. The edition will be on view and available for purchase beginning October 7, 2021, at Pace Prints, 521 West 26th Street, 3rd Floor.
Pendletonโs installation at MoMA transforms the museumโs Marron Atrium into a dynamic arena exploring Blackness, abstraction, and the avant-garde. In his monumental floor-to-ceiling installation, Adam Pendleton has created a spatial collage of text, image, and soundโa total work of art for the 21st century.
Adam Pendleton created Untitled (WHO IS QUEEN?) in an edition of 35, using handmade paper, at the Pace Paper studio. Pendleton has explored the medium of handmade paper over the course of three years, stenciling pure black pigment into white paper pulp. The artistโs use of gestural marks and text both reveals and obscures meaning.
Painting in his own distinctive, insistent hand, Pendleton imbues each work with a sense of gravitas and humor. The central question, โWho Is Queen?โ, detaches both the authoritative and informal meanings of โqueenโ and redirects them toward an examination of underlying assumptions about queerness, identity, and power.
A native of Richmond, Virginia, the former capital of the Confederate States of America, Pendleton is acutely attuned to the polyvalence of codes and symbols, as well as to the layers of history that underlie them. Untitled (WHO IS QUEEN?) is a page from Pendletonโs vast library of linguistic material, and an intimate document of his massive, multivoiced museum installation.

Adam Pendleton ๐บ๐ธ New Print Release โข Exhibition News, by jnschicago on Oct 7, 2021 17:51:19 GMT 1, This edition of 35 is priced at $6k.
Given the amount of interest/exposure for this artist (in particular the current MOMA show) this strikes me as a very good investment.
Typically, this board doesn't do well with discussions of price/value. But let's try!

Adam Pendleton ๐บ๐ธ New Print Release โข Exhibition News, by Deleted on Oct 7, 2021 18:46:51 GMT 1, Seems like this is top quality in terms of production and priced at its value for an artist who is making waves This artist is one to watch in my view Look forwards to seeing anyone receive and frame one Congrats to those who scored, seems like a shrewd move compared to some of the stuff being peddled currently !
Heโs not one to watch. Heโs an institutionally loved superstar, represented by pace.
This still doesnโt mean his prints will have any value. Many bluechip artists donโt have great print values and so far his prints secondary have gone nowhere

Obviously one to watch is in the context of the fact he has a solo show at the moma Hardly one to watch as a new emerging artist but as you say his secondary print market hasnโt done a lot Iโm suggesting his market is one to watch for that reason With very low output and are refusal to conform to pump and dump style frenzied output , brand links to whatever is trendy and kaws esque over production and milking it he is a long term top notch artist Thus one to watch

I'd love to see some support for your statement.

Adam Pendleton ๐บ๐ธ New Print Release โข Exhibition News, by kjg on Oct 9, 2021 14:45:42 GMT 1, Plans have changed, I will go to the framer next week, so you'll have to make do with this photo for now. I have the same print and I chose the same frame.
โa woman on the train asks angela davis for an autographโ, 2017. Silkscreen print, edition of 25.
