Based on a clear consumer insight, single minded and very well executed.
Makes me feel really uncomfortable but forces me to address the issue.
Brilliant.
... also love the fact that it's old school.
It's about distributing a message not generating demand for an image which will later translate to ยฃยฃยฃ for the artist.
Props.

Sorry, I'm not picking on you or the poster in question - I just want you to explain why you think it is a clear consumer insight? To me that sounds like the artist has interviewed 100 or so drinkers and has evidence that suggests those that drink WKD are much more likely to glass someone in the face after a night out.
I have no evidence whatsoever to back my assumptions up, but I would hazard a guess that it is more about what is inside peoples heads and not their glasses when such offences are committed.
Also - how exactly have you addressed the issue? Have you started a petition in your local community to ban the sale of WKD. Have you started giving talks about alcohol related violence in your local community centre?
You obviously like the poster and that's cool, but they're some pretty bold statements you've come out with.
Personally I think it's ok, but it would be much better imo if it did a little bit more than just pass comment on what is obviously a serious social problem - maybe directing people to a website for help and advice on the dangers of drinking would have been a good start.

Re: Clear consumer insightโฆ
WKD was launched in '96 and is a market leader in the RTD category. It's heartland consumer are 18 - 25yr old males in the North and itโs strong at 5.5% (compared to other premixed alternatives served in 37.5 cl volumes - this includes bottled beerโฆ basically you get more drunk on the same volume).
This coincides with a rise in alcohol related harm, amongst this group over the same period of time (Check out Alcohol Concern for the stats)โฆ This isnโt new thinking, although itโs attribution to the category has caused debate (โฆ see the British Medical Journal).
The net result is that a number of white papers have been published, which are based on the sort of quant and qual research youโve highlighted, that call for restrictions on the category.
Long story shortโฆ I feel comfortable with the insight which led to the proposition (โฆ while you may not agree with it, itโs considered and substantiated).
Re: How I have addressed the issue?
By simply taking some time to think about it, read a little more about it and have an opinion on it.
Cheers

Thanks for responding.
That's all really interesting stuff you've written there and does make for a very convincing argument. Except WKD is 5.0% and has been since 2003. That is less alcohol by volume than all wines and spirits and quite a few other premium lagers and comparable to most other RTDs on the market - so I doubt very much that WKD gets you more drunk than anything else, and I also doubt that there are any stats that say WKD is to blame for the rise in alcohol related attacks.
Some very good points you made all the same though. Thanks again.

I should have been more clear.
WKD is the / a market leader (depends by region) in the RTD category.
RTD's are blamed (arguably partly) for the rise in alcohol related harm.
By proxy... So is WKD.
... and as a result the basis for me saying "based on clear consumer insight".
End of.

They arose out of a clear strategy from drinks companies, aimed at 18 - 25's who during the late 1980's were not drinking the old established lagers/beers etc; but were instead getting their kicks from taking ecstacy etc as part of the rave scene. Faced with falling demand, plus changes to their monopolistic power from the earlier Thatcher regime, the brewing companies had to do something; hence the introduction of 'Two Dogs' and Hooch' - alcoholic lemonade.
And combine this with pubs that are no more than warehouses ( no tables, or chairs, plus loud music, which all work to increase the amount drunk ), then it's clear that drinks companies are exploiting people. And out of this increased alcohol consumption comes violence.
It's not an easy subject to get to explain as there are so many factors, but one thing is clear, drinks like WKD are deliberately aimed at younger drinkers.

Surely only a bit though? The artist can't be expected to be out of pocket and printing these must cost something. Look forward to seeing these up in London.
My only problem is that I know what they're all about which will negate the artist's desired effect which they may otherwise have had. I'll need to test them out on a friend with no prior knowledge to see if the message gets across or just gets mistaken for another WKD ad.

Yes but my previous point was : will the (largely) somnabulist population, dulled by advertising and marketing overload these days, be able to tell the difference? It's a small point as I think the paste ups are a graet idea on the whole but the artist asked for views and my view is that the only people who will get it are probably those for whom the message isn't necessary anyway.

Imbue ๐ฌ๐ง 24Hr Art Club โข Coca Cola โข Virgin Mary, by retardthebear on Aug 19, 2009 19:23:41 GMT 1, Is it not the point that they are meant to appear as another WKD ad though!? Yes but my previous point was : will the (largely) somnabulist population, dulled by advertising and marketing overload these days, be able to tell the difference? It's a small point as I think the paste ups are a graet idea on the whole but the artist asked for views and my view is that the only people who will get it are probably those for whom the message isn't necessary anyway.
A good point and probably accurate to boot. However I cant help but feel that may also be the point, thusly, the joke is on them.
