Invader โข Invasion Kits IK, by rickyc on Dec 11, 2006 16:47:23 GMT 1, Hey all
I was on the Space Invader website and really really want one of these: www.space-invaders.com/shop/index.php?page=shop/flypage&product_id=153&
I was wondering if anyone knew where to get any in or around London? Or is the website my best bet?
Thanks Rick

Invader โข Invasion Kits IK, by gm on Dec 12, 2006 0:54:50 GMT 1, Let me get this right - you send him โฌ75 and get back 80 small ceramic tiles, with which to make up something of his design and stick up on a wall "under his name"?
You pay Space Invader for the privilege of advertising on his behalf.
If you like the moaics concept, why not go somewhere like www.mosaics.co.uk/acatalog/Craft_Mix_Box_1.html and get 2250 small ceramic tiles for ยฃ28.92 (+ VAT) then use your own imagination?

i agree too...whilst i think they are a really cool idea & i am a fan of his work, the fact that you really could do it yourself removes any value from it...the same goes for the art he makes with the rubiks cubes. both a very cool to look at either on the street or in a gallery, but I can't see the point in owning it.
anything thats painted or sprayed adds value in my eyes as I'd not be able to do it myself...or at least not with the same effect!

I have no problems with pictures, cos I'm crap at drawing/painting and couldn't do it myself. I am willing and happy to pay for an image that says something meaningful to me.
However, I don't see the point of paying other people for stuff that I can do myself, whether it's little bits of tile or haircuts.
I was making space invader murals for my bedroom from sheets of origami paper in 1979, when I saw my first SI machines and got addicted to the bloody things.

That's cool, I tried the same with Carl Andre's bricks. My first venture into the art market was when Joy Division's Closer L.P. came out I saw a framed print in my local Oxfam and bought it for a fiver 'cos it looked like the LP cover. The print was an original signed ecthing of Dante Gabriel Rossetti's the death of Beatrice

Invader โข Invasion Kits IK, by irf2112 on Dec 12, 2006 16:45:54 GMT 1, People are missing the point here - it's about originality. Go to the Tate Modern and you'd probably be able to recreate most of the stuff. Invader was original enough to use rubiks cubes as art. He was also very original with his maps. Looking at POWs stuff quite alot could be 'recreated'. I rate Invader's Alex as one of my favourite prints (couldnt quite afford the real thing but this is good enough for me).
As for something that's easier to do - Look at Hirst's "Quene 1am" print - its just 9 circles in different colours - quite easy to recreate if one wanted.... Or you could pay ยฃ10,000 for one (ed of 100).

I'm not on about the prints, and I'm not on about the street pieces - have a look in the Space Invaders London thread - I bloody love em. It's the "invasion kits" idea that I don't get - is it "an original" if you have to assemble it yourself? Original would be the guy who designed Space Invaders in the first place, and I'm pretty sure that wasn't the guy who gets โฌ75 for 80 small square pieces of china.
I wouldn't pay 10p for one cos (a) I know I could do it myself if I wanted to (we're starting to talk in circles here, and not just very expensive designer-label circles), and (b) I think they're a load of bollocks.

Quite a few say that about my work and it really gets at me.
Here I am spending more time than people think on designing and painting stuff for people to just say "Thats easy" and "I could do that for ยฃ50" or "ยฃ300! F OFF!"
DIY art is great, but you are in fact appreciating an artists work by buying his/her own artwork.

Ah, but I did... along with pretty much every kid/teen who had access to biros and graph paper in 79/80. We were doing exactly the same as what sold for several hundred quids in Laz recently. It was usually in our maths exercise books.
Also see my further up post about the origami paper.
I have no need to do it any more.
Is it only art if somebody pays money for it?
Is it art at all if nobody ever sees it?

Know what you mean. Even now SI is a great game. A couple of years ago I managed to source both an original b&w table top Invader and an original Taito standup machine (not the nasty Midway licensed copy) in top condition.

Fair enough, sensible answer, helps me understand how people other than myself see it. Thanks.
Galaxians was always my favourite to play on a tabletop.
