Watch Collectors โ Buy & Sell, by jkesquire on Nov 21, 2018 15:20:50 GMT 1, I personally would recommend an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph....arguably my favorite stainless steel watch This is the cleanest watch i've owned & currently my daily piece. I don't think you can beat it.... I own the exact same watch! I love it, but always wanted the chronograph. I think I am going to trade mine in and add cash to pick up the new panda chrono with the white dial and black subdials. Either way, it's tough to beat a royal oak (in that price range)

Watch Collectors โ Buy & Sell, by BKBOI on Nov 21, 2018 16:53:05 GMT 1, Don't over look a Panerai, the base models are very nice and clean. Base 000 is just class and I think now discontinued Yes. Replaced by the PAM1000. Same look but using an in-house caliber p6000 and lower depth rating (100m).
I do agree, base models are vintage looking, fun and clean. I have the PAM005 as a daily beater. My Sub doesn't get any wrist time anymore.

That is also the PAM428 special edition which is already sold out. There is a regular edition PAM424 which can be easily acquired. Send me a PM if you are interested and I can refer you to a dealer than can give you a great price on the 424.
Be careful where you source Panerai watches, their fakes are so good I had to look at the watch for at least 5 minutes before spotting what was wrong with it.

Hahahahaha. Sorry for the belated quote, but this roast needed to be recognized for the artwork that it is.

Watch Collectors โ Buy & Sell, by Howard Johnson on Jan 3, 2019 19:25:40 GMT 1, Wow. I did not realize that we have some watch gurus on here! If its ok with y'all I'm just gonna switch this thread into a general discussion of the hobby.
I am brand new to it. I'm frankly using it as a methadone of sorts to get off the hard stuff (art). Luckily, the lessons I've learned collecting art are almost the exact same with watches! I couldn't resist a bit of impulse buying so as of now my small collection has a 1955 Brietling dress watch, a 1959 seamaster, the hirst swatch, and a Poljot that saw combat during the Afghanistan conflict.
Alas, my impulsive ass regrets getting buying 3 instead of saving for something better. But, I've learned my lesson and am very very slowly narrowing down my first entry level piece. What I've concluded as of this writing are that these are the best "bang for buck" pieces (that also fit my personal style): Speedmaster Reduced, 90's Seamaster with a bit of damage to knock it down into the 1500 range, or a vintage Cellini or Datejust.
What do you think about these models as entry level pieces? Is there any others you'd recommend? I really love the sophisticated "moon-phase" APs and VCs; do these brands or any others make a realistically priced piece in this style? The used market is obviously much more accessible, but should I wait and by new? Are warranties and manufacture provenance important enough to spend an extra 30-40% on a new watch?
Thank you in advance for your guidence!

Watch Collectors โ Buy & Sell, by BKBOI on Jan 3, 2019 19:44:57 GMT 1, Whatever you do, do not buy the speedmaster reduced. Try to get a vintage speedmaster moonwatch. This is a classic hand wound watch that collectors love. No one I know will collect the speedmaster reduced (which is an automatic movement). I know it will take a while but you can get one for between 2.5-3k usd.
Rolex watches (except Cellini) are always the smart buy but very hard to get a man's size (36mm and up) for the price range you mentioned.
You do not need to buy a new watch from an AD but you have to be careful since there are a lot of fakes out there.

Thank you!
The whole reason I want the speedmaster is for the historical aspect of it and kinda assumed all of the models were more or less the same. In terms of a vintage speedmaster with actual horological significance, is there a time frame or reference number you'd recommend? Cheers!

Dive watches are so versatile. I'm thinking thats probably the style to go after for my first large purchase. Now its only a matter of whether or not I can control myself and hold off for sub or yachtmaster, or give in to a used omega, which I love, but Rolex is freaking Rolex for a reason! patience is totally a virtue when it comes to watches.

Watch Collectors โ Buy & Sell, by JW on Jan 3, 2019 21:17:54 GMT 1, While vintage is nice, as mentioned it can be a minefield if you're new to the game. If you'd prefer a new/used Speedy rather than vintage and want extra historical value, I'd go for the manual winding version with the Hesalite. It's a touch cheaper than sapphire but be warned that the it does scratch easier. It was the type that went to the moon though - the view being that it cracks rather than shatters like sapphire would.
Here's a decent summary of the differences: www.watchfinder.co.uk/articles/review-omega-speedmaster-hesalite-v
Unlike buying a stainless steel Rolex these days, you should be able to negotiate a decent discount if buying new.
I bought one because I love the history too. Very cool entry level watch but admittedly not my day to day. A frequently debated con about it is that you shouldn't really swim with it. The crown doesn't screw down like on a Daytona so risks getting water damange. It was almost a deal breaker for me.
So that considered, I'd think about selling a couple of your less desired prints and step up to a Rolex Submariner (ie No Date). You can find them at some Authorised Dealers unlike most SS models or at least the waiting list is shorter. I know the brand may be a little cliched but it was my first step above a TAG, and I absolutely love it. It'll last forever, will hold its value better than a Speedy and actually looks better as it gets beaten up over time.

I do like a solid dive watch, the Avenger Seawolf II can be found at decent prices, quite a thick watch on the wrist though, I also stick it on the isofrane strap over the summer months but it's now back on the bracelet.

Watch Collectors โ Buy & Sell, by Howard Johnson on Jan 16, 2019 2:42:19 GMT 1, Thank you all so much for the recommendations!
I ended up going with a Tudor. My ideal "everyday watch" is a two-tone datejust, but I just frankly wont have the cash to afford a decent one anytime soon. After a week on the wrist i'm absolutely in love with my little 80s Prince Date. The quality of the Tudor is stunning, and aside from the size, I dont really notice all that much of a difference from the datejust. Also, fun note, this watch was more-or-less the same one worn by Patrick Bateman in American Psycho (his was a datejust with vertical lines instead of a "linen" dial, but still!).
I'm now working with a 60s seamaster, 55' Breitling Geneve, 80s Poljot, a 90s Navitimer thats in the mail (stoked!), a Hirst swatch, and my 80s Tudor. I'm going to take a break for a while, but I'm really happy with how the collection is coming along and I think I really only need a solid dive watch to round it out. I'm already thinking of going for a vintage Black Bay, but they are quite hard to find. If anyone has a diver rec (ASIDE FROM THE SUBMARINER) please get at me!
What are your favorite watch collecting tips and tricks? Do you go vintage or contemporary? Which brands do you love or hate, and why?

Watch Collectors โ Buy & Sell, by Dive Jedi on Jul 4, 2019 20:20:50 GMT 1, Thought this would be the best thread for it....
I have owned this watch for over 10 years, but time to let it go. Since I stopped working I basicly go around in shorts and a T-shirt. Bought it back in the day to celebrate a new job. In my opinion one of the coolest watches ever made. But that is rather subjective.
Anyway, only worn in the office etc.. Most certainly not during traveling, painting or diving. There are only 1,500 made of these worldwide. Looking for GBP 1,500 - saw a few on the bay for a lot more.
Got plenty of pics to show condition. Works perfectly.
