Watch Collectors โ Buy & Sell, by Lazarus II on Jan 17, 2021 2:09:07 GMT 1, i bought and sold too often, sold some that I should have held eg submariners, but probably bought some that were always going to drop in value. My first โgoodโ watch was a Rolex Date bought in 1995 in Saudi Arabia. I dont know if you even still get a Rolex Date, this was an Aramco(the oil company) watch that every employee got if you worked for Aramco for 10 years. Many employees took these straight to a local watch dealer untouched, still fully wrapped with full paperwork and i bought one of these. Still have it somewhere.

Thatโs a collection I can only dream of. A couple of my grails right there!! The watches Iโm trying (and also not really succeeding) to save for are a Tudor BB58 (still unsure whether I would go for the original or latest blue one) and an Omega Aqua Terra. The latter is, in my eyes, one of the most flexible wearing watches out there.
At present though, I sold off a bunch of pieces when moving house so only have two. My favourite of those two is hands down my Oris Aquis. I love the tool feel to it and the unique design of them. Love the dial on it too which really changes depending on the light. Not anywhere up there in the big leagues of some of you guys! What I can buy is also slightly limited by the fact I have the wrists of a child and I HATE when I see sundials on peopleโs wrists. Classic sizes will never date in my opinion.

I really think theyโre one of the best value watches on the market! Thereโs a LOT of bang for your buck there and they tick pretty much every box for me. Love the Pelagos too but I couldnโt carry it off with my wrist size. More of a tool watch too I guess.
At this stage, I would say Iโm more of an enthusiast than a collector but itโs nice to set yourself goals.

Watch Collectors โ Buy & Sell, by JockoLad on Jan 17, 2021 8:05:10 GMT 1, Iโm more of a Casio โFoxtrot 91 Whiskyโ kind of guy myself. An incredibly understated watch that not only looks superb on the wrist (the sharp edges compliment my jawline) but also tells time perfectly.
I got mine at a reduced price from Argos about 7 years ago and still havenโt needed to replace the battery.
An understated classic.

Watch Collectors โ Buy & Sell, by eviljguano on Jan 17, 2021 13:58:52 GMT 1, Hodinkee
Trawl around Hodinkee and see what takes your fancy, lot's of interesting stuff on there.
Then have a look on some of the watchfinder sites see what is in your budget.
Not really any 'sleepers' anymore as it's so popular.
Depends on your budget but usual adage 'buy what you like' is usually the way to go. Lots of fakes, especially Rolex, around. Gone are the days of good looking Submariners with hookey innards. Stuff you can buy now for a few thousand will fool even the most experienced collector.

The more patina the better. Proof of a life well lived. Watches are for wearing after all.
Give me vintage over modern any day of the week. I tire of all the totally boring and unimaginative modern Rolex collections.
Enjoy my friend.
Agreed, thanks, unlike the Art world often the worse state an old watch is in the more it's worth, driven in the most part by the Japanese collectors, many a horror story of Rolex 'restoring' an old watch and taking tens of thousands off it's value.

Canโt get on with the size of modern watches, so have a collection of stuff from the 70s and older. 1970s Omega DeVille, 1960s Constellation that was my dadโs, plus a 1930s Omega dress watch. Rest are a proper mix - my favourite of those is a 50s Lord Elgin. All worn regularly - no flat file for any of them ๐
