Hokusai the great wave - re-used in other artworks?, by artmonster on Feb 16, 2021 11:03:40 GMT 1,
ok, so I have always had a weak spot for the Great Wave by Hokusai. Obviously impossible to get a hold of the real thing and don’t want a cheap skint canvas spoil the feeling it gives me. I was wondering if anyone knows of any artists & art titles where this images was re-used/re-invented? Pictures would make it even better!! Thanks very much in advance!

Hokusai the great wave - re-used in other artworks?, by stock on Feb 16, 2021 13:22:11 GMT 1, Oh this question, happy you asked this. Other than urban art, I collect Japanese woodblock prints. There's a huge market online, and a lot of the works are gorgeous and reasonable.
I'd first consider contemporary Japanese prints that have a similar feel of Hokusai's work (he was ahead of his time) but are less expensive, see artists like Tokuriki Tomikichiro, and Teruhide Kato.
If you're set on a later edition Hokusai or a contemporary, the great thing with Ukioy-e work is that it's a lot like an antique form of street art, so even with Hokusai prints there are "later editions" or reprints in the 1920's that are special - which is what Samo is talking about above.
To find a good copy of a Hokusai or other later prints, you need to know the basics of how to read a woodblock print education.asianart.org/resources/how-to-read-a-woodblock-print/ by the (1) sensor stamp; (2) artist signature; and (3) quality of the print.
- (1) Sensor stamp dates earlier work, different sensor stamps over time to approve the work to be printed in Japan: mercury.lcs.mit.edu/~jnc/prints/nanushi.html
-(2) artist signature changed over time, a helpful guide can be found here www.ukiyo-e.se/signatur.html
- (3) You can easily tell later edition prints from modern repros just by looking at the paper, many should be old any yellow, moonlitseaprints.com/japanese-woodblock-print-real/
Best comprehensive sites I use as a reference for price, to date work, and find work by artist/subject (like landscape (to see waterscapes) - In the UK- Japanese Gallery: japanesegallery.com/ - Ronin Gallery: www.roningallery.com/collections
Other helpful sites: - Lavenberg Collection: www.myjapanesehanga.com/ - www.viewingjapaneseprints.net/index.html
Notes on finding authentic prints on ebay: - I don't buy anything out of Japan because there's a large market for them there, and most of the authentic works will be in Japanese characters, the listings in English charters are usually trying to rip-off people who don't know better.
Hope this helps! Go forth and collect

Picked up this Richard Berner OG a short while back. I was drawn to the dark humour in his doodles - and like you - I'm a big fan of the iconic wave 🤙

And your picture is where?
I think it’s just amazing how it has been re-interpreted in so many ways, both is staying true to the image or putting the new artist’s twist on it. I never really realised how minimalistic the image can be made while still being recognisable.

Hokusai the great wave - re-used in other artworks?, by Jareds Mind on Feb 17, 2021 17:12:55 GMT 1, I remember seeing a print but I've forgotten who it's by. It's of a girl knelling on the floor and holding a goldfish bowl with Hokusai's wave in it and a goldfish jumping out. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Here you go! I happen to come across this looking at eBay this morning.

Hokusai the great wave - re-used in other artworks?, by Jareds Mind on Feb 17, 2021 17:23:01 GMT 1, One more I forgot about, which I can't believe I didn't think of it, it's hanging in my hallway. Cheap print in a cheap ikea frame, but I love the message. I added some caution tape on the spacers. Work by John Larigakis.

An out of the blue recommendation.....thanks.
Just bought one off his website. Simple and clever print and very reasonable price for international post.

Great! Glad it caught your attention. I saw it posted one day on the feed from PangeaSeed Foundation. They promote ocean awareness through art.

Very nice I think the black and white interpretations come out really nice actually To the point where I prefer them
