Guides to starting a gallery?, by LJCal on Feb 18, 2021 2:38:33 GMT 1, Iโd say avoid a physical gallery and just setup an online platform for secondary sales in the first instance focusing on blue chip artists, I think anyone with half a brain, a working knowledge of the art market and and a bit of capital can make a small online gallery work, key is to keep overheads low. Once you have a client base, a track record and can raise some serious capital you can look to try and represent artists and possibly a physical space.

Guides to starting a gallery?, by Gentle Mental on Feb 18, 2021 11:35:04 GMT 1, Iโm in Singapore. Covid is quite well controlled. Rent has dipped substantially. The shopping crowd is back. I have good connections with local and international artists who could pitch in. I really Like the idea of creating a community space. Promoting fresh artists. Not the usual tourist/auction tat - although I Will be selling those to pay the rent as well. There will be an online store as well - folks in this thread get early early bird discount. Haha. Just leave a comment!

1/ Believe in, love and understand the art and artists you're selling. 2/ Know the market, but also create and exploit your own. 3/ Don't rely on a single revenue stream. 4/ Spend as much time marketing as you do exhibiting. 5/ Be prepared to put up with snarky, know-all, arms-length comments on this forum from people who've never run a gallery or dealt face-to-face with artists.

Guides to starting a gallery?, by maven on Feb 18, 2021 15:15:38 GMT 1, Something Iโm considering....I bought an apartment for cash during lockdown just to renovate and either rent it out or sell on and make a few quid. But Iโm busier with work again and Iโm wondering if I could turn my apartment into a little gallery space, appointment only. I need somewhere to store my art anyway, Iโd be interested to know if anyone thinks it could work having a small studio gallery, for viewings in addition to having an online business.

Challenge with Manhattan (or London) is most likely zoning (i.e. imagine you live on the 5th floor and there is an apartment gallery on the 3rd floor that is always holding up the lift / elevator). Good luck!

Guides to starting a gallery?, by ashley123 on Feb 22, 2021 14:31:46 GMT 1, The first step of starting an art gallery is researching the local market. If you found the space, it is essential to design it. Also, it is important to create an online presence (we live in times of technology, so most people learn everything from the Internet). It so happens that I started working with the guys from www.topwritersreview.com/reviews/darwinessay/. One of my co-workers worked on the article about galleries, so I found out some interesting things (live and learn, you know). Also, I want to add that it would be great to create network opportunities with other art galleries in your neighborhood to promote each other. And of course, prepare a great opening night. It sets the momentum for how the community receives your artistโs work. Hope it helps!

It's not a guide on how to open a gallery, but this book will teach you everything you need to know to get a working knowledge of the economics of the market and how the industry actually works. It's all about relationship building like any other sales or marketing. Instagram and online galleries have made it so much more accessible to you and me, before you had to leave your house and attend gallery events and shows to network. Now you can slide into their DMs, and advertise on google. Shopify store is only $30 a month and they do all the hosting and processing, another $50 a month for google ads and you're off and running. If you sell more than $2-3k a month on e bay it pays for itself with the reduced final value fee and you are building your own business and client base instead of e bays. Cheers and good luck.

Definitely a classic. Iโd also recommend the two Sarah Thorton books (โ33 actsโ and โ7 daysโ), Edward Winklemanโs โHow toโ and the Leo Castelli biography. All should be required reading for anyone interested in the art world either as a fan or a professional.

Guides to starting a gallery?, by Ken Hashimoto on Feb 23, 2021 6:56:33 GMT 1, As someone who has (somehow) successfully owned and operated an art gallery in the two most expensive markets in the US for a decade now, I can confidently say that I donโt recommend this profession to anyone. Seriously, itโs brutal and difficult and the odds of success are slim to none.
On the flip side, while I probably made more money as a bartender than I do now, Iโve never been happier and I love what I do.
As Carlo McCormick is fond of saying: want to know how to end up with some money in the art world? Start with a lot of it.

Your artists wont sell themselves, your fancy gallery marketing won't do much either, only your reputation among a group of collectors will. No point launching a gallery without a client base that sees you as their go to person.

Guides to starting a gallery?, by ricardob on Feb 23, 2021 9:26:45 GMT 1, My wife and I own a gallery. It has been running continuously for 20 years in the same spot. It had its ups and downs. COVID has had a huge impact on our local area (far-north Queensland - Australia) and we have been investing on the online business to boost sales (our new website is almost ready for launch)
It will only work if you have large margins, have a very good grip on overheads and cashflow, the right location and excellent staff and excellent customer service.
We've sold over 4000 limited edition photographs so far and we are not rich (but we are definitely happy)

Provide something to artists more than retailing. Anytime you are doing business, set up an entity, so you have personal insulation from potential business issues.
From where I sit, the online gallery / art dealer thing, is boring. Making money on art (or anything) is the worst interface with it. Try to change the world. Its a lot more fun. Just make sure you have a job to pay your bils.
Try to refrain from laundering money, a lot of galleries do it, however fools rush in where angels fear to tread.

Find a group of artists that you like, work out a deal. Then contact and visit galleries around the Uk to promote and sell the artists stuff. Your reward, artworks and a % commission, meeting new people and hopefully having a bit of fun
Do people do this already?

most galleries take 50% as standard, so I'm surprised you can make any living with such small margins unless it's quantity over quality per se
