Counter Editions Katherine Bernhardt 8th & 15th April, by kuni on Apr 4, 2021 13:28:05 GMT 1, Her painting aside these large editions that don't sell out is a really bizarre long term business strategy. There's absolutely no scarcity to her work at all and i can't imagine any urgency to pick up one of these prints. There are still mountains of her previous releases available at primary.

Counter Editions Katherine Bernhardt 8th & 15th April, by steve9999 on May 9, 2021 21:08:23 GMT 1, The fact that 6 weeks to a year AFTER they have been released tells you absolutely EVERYTHING you need to know about why NOT to buy them. This work is atrocious....someone is spending A LOT of money to try and make this work into "something." Just insipid and deplorable.

Haha. Think this says EVERYTHING we need to know about you than her mate.
She has an MA from New York School of Art and a BA from the Art Institute Chicago, she has numerous Museum shows behind her and a 20 year career of exhibiting internationally across Europe, Japan and the USA. She's in the Smithsonian and the Carnegie Museum.
I'm pretty sure her goal isn't to suddenly start creating flippable prints for sneaker heads.
Most times it's about catching up with them, rather than the other way around.

Counter Editions Katherine Bernhardt 8th & 15th April, by steve9999 on Jun 8, 2021 18:01:58 GMT 1, And your reply says more about YOU...who gives a turd where she graduated from or what degrees she has? I'm supposed to be impressed by that? Some of the "best" and most collected artists on the planet never went to "art school" or graduated with degrees. (Many of them collected here on UAA.) No number of degrees is going to make me believe that KN's work is anything more than "decorative bullshit." And as for what "collections" her works can be found, that's utter nonsense as well. There are hundreds of second rate artists whose works are in certain "collections" because their works are donated to the organization....it doesn't mean that the Board of the Carnegie decided she was of such extraordinary talent, that she "deserved" to be in their collection.
As for the fact that she's had shows around the world and been painting for 20 years says nothing more than she has good management. Thomas Kincaide had shows around the world for many years, Hunt Slonem is having shows around the world. Get back to me when legit museums are having "retrospectives" for this crap and then maybe, I'll reconsider. An artist having works sell at auction and other places means absolutely nothing except there are enough people out there who like what she paints or buy on speculation. All of this work is gonna wind up for pennies on the dollar in a few years just like the Murakami editions are right now.
The contemporary art world is filled with artists that (the people behind them) are trying to make "a thing." And opinions are like a**holes...everybody has one. Mine happens to be that it's absolute crap and you may have an opinion that is completely the opposite of mine, but don't ever think that someone's "educational background" or collection their work is in is justification for their work being "good" or "worth it." There's no accounting for why some artists "make it" and others don't......just ask "the Mr.s"...Brainwash or Doodle...both creating (in my opinion) unadulterated crap, and yet, sold out shows around the world, works selling for insane prices at auction......it doesn't mean shit except if YOU love it and can afford it, then you should buy it. If it increases in value, then great. If not, you've spent what you could afford and spent the time enjoying it.
Enjoy your works by KB, but no information you could possibly present is going to make me like the work or believe that you have justified it's "value." And that's the way the art world should be. No one should be "convinced" to buy a work of art.

I was just responding to this statement you made...that a sell out print somehow denotes relevance or quality.
"The fact that 6 weeks to a year AFTER they have been released tells you absolutely EVERYTHING you need to know about why NOT to buy them"
There are still primary Emin's on that site from the year 2000.

Counter Editions Katherine Bernhardt 8th & 15th April, by Deleted on Jun 10, 2021 7:04:58 GMT 1, The fact that 6 weeks to a year AFTER they have been released tells you absolutely EVERYTHING you need to know about why NOT to buy them. This work is atrocious....someone is spending A LOT of money to try and make this work into "something." Just insipid and deplorable. "The fact that 6 weeks to a year AFTER they have been released tells you absolutely EVERYTHING you need to know about why NOT to buy them"Haha. What would you say is an artist's goal when creating a print edition? My view is there are three possible reasons:
1) It's a commercial endeavour. You can make a lot of money selling out an edition, so you produce something at a price that reflects your market value and hopefully make a packet as it sells out.
2) You want to expose yourself to a wider market. An edition available to the public hopefully builds interest and creates more demand for your original works.
3) You want to give everyone an opportunity to own your work, which would usually be beyond the budget of ordinary people, so produce something affordable/free, e.g. Banksy GDP or Stik giveaways.
I don't see how Bernhardt is anything other than the first. By my count, she has 14 editions available on Counter Editions, all priced at ยฃ3,000+ and largely unsold. So is your point that she's produced these prints out of artistic passion, not in an effort to make money? That she was driven to screen print 100 cigarettes in different colours because the muse possessed her? Just trying to understand what the motivation would be for such large, frequent, expensive releases, if not to actually sell the prints.
