Banksy concept for barely legal poster, by Reader on Mar 25, 2021 19:00:35 GMT 1, Never liked this piece tbh, and it's up against some serious, serious works, makes it look pretty weak. Wonder if that'll impact the result.

I hear ya but there were so many amazing pieces from this show and this one just felt like a Los Angeles reference that was thrown together because the show was in LA, which is fine. Iconic, but most other pieces there were certainly stronger and more representative

Historically, Barely Legal was a turning point for Banksy.

If that's the case then explain how this De Kooning sold for ยฃ100m. I know your point, but comparing/constrasting one of the most important paintings of the 20th century to this Banksy is kinda funny (and most important because of the Woman series, this particular one is lesser but at the time it sold I think it might have been the only one still in private hands).
Even funnier, 50 years from now it could be appropriate.
Personally, one of my greatest art experiences was seeing De Kooning's 'Woman' series reunited at his MoMA retrospective. I believe it was their first reunion since originally show at Sidney Janis Gallery in 1953.

I think we're already there, and I don't see anything that would make to think it's changing. He's a cultural force. I mean, I dislike a lot of Banksy actually. That being said, his impact is undeniable as is his place in history (IMO). We're at around the 20% mark in, but I can't think of an artist whose impact so far has been anywhere near Banksy. The only thing that concerns, to this point, is the very limited institutional support. Despite what some throw about, it is actually vital in keeping an artist 'alive' well past their living years. It memorializes an artist's place in the cannon, their place in history, and teaches that to new generations.
