I was squirreling away Leonard Babys last year when he was a nobody on IG. $1000 could get you a 24" by 36" painting. Now they are over $10k each. Just crumbs compared to the other gains though. |

I think anyone waiting for the editions market to โcome backโ is sadly misled. The idea that pricing will bounce or correct is wrong, personal opinion of course.
yes global economics and political situations have subdued most asset values but what needs to be taken account of is the sheer volume of editions and their pricing which has fundamentally changed recently
5 years ago there simply wasnโt the accessibility and vast quantity of editions being pumped out and primary pricing was very different to secondary, galleries accepted this
now between HENI type business models, timed editions and the sheer accessibility of socials combined with primary pricing being pumped up for profits to be made (canโt blame them) it has totally changed
Whilst the primary art market as a whole has historical trends that can be predicted if you watch closely the print and edition market as it now exists is brand new, it doesnโt have historical trends that reflect current volumes of works held and being produced
we now live in the world of artsy, second hand marketplaces that are instantly available and masses of bedroom dealers, collectors and most of those are not either bothered about or educated enough to discern a timed edition or a signed poster from a high quality smaller print run
bottom line is buy solid blue chip stock or something you love because otherwise you may be waiting a very long time , aka forever
