What to do when...., by jcookgurl on May 7, 2021 2:40:32 GMT 1, You sell a piece of art to a collector who promises to keep the sale private and then promptly lets his son send a message to the artist who’s work it was calling me (the seller) out.
This is such a shit thing that happened to me today and I know there’s nothing I can do about it, but, just curious if anyone has dealt with this before and wants to commiserate with me.
I wish I never sold this painting to this person. It makes me regret the whole damn sale and I would rather have it hanging on my wall then the money.
Ugh. Had anyone ever dealt with this before?

I did. He didn’t respond. I think the artist hates me forever. The buyer is on this forum. I hate the idea of calling them out...as much as it pained me to deal with what happened today, I really don’t feel like calling them out and putting them on blast is the right thing to do karmically. He will get his, somehow, someday, someway.

What to do when...., by tinypoubelle on May 7, 2021 7:24:01 GMT 1, It happens. I’ve known it happen a fair bit. It’s disappointing but not entirely surprising. People want to get closer to their artists, they want to show them that they are big and true collectors, so that hopefully they can get something else in the future.
I’ve had it happen to me numerous times and I suspect I’ve done it to others. It’s shit but there’s always a chance it will happen.
The thing with creating secrets, as part of deals, is you’re asking someone else, to take part in something that (as soon as the piece is with them) they no longer have any incentive to continue with.
Also, why was it that we asked these people to keep it private? It was really so as not to offend the artist, gallery etc and risk our good relationship with them? The truth is, if our relationship was that good, we’d have done the decent thing in the first place, contacted them and said “I need to sell this, I’m coming to you first”. For some reason we wanted to keep it “between us” so we didn’t do that, so the reality is that by not being honest in the first place, we’re asking others to guard our secrets, which probably isn’t fair or realistic.
If you sell something to someone, sell with clean hands, or expect the worst to happen. This won’t be the only time.
When I sold some Pejac prints, I told Max a few weeks later. He already knew. When I sold Pejac originals, the same happened.
If my behaviour wasn’t totally above board, why would anyone else’s be?
The next thing to upset you will be people buying things from you, for their personal collection, only for you to find it on someone else’s walls on Instagram within 2 weeks. Brace yourself for that one.

What to do when...., by artzzzy on May 7, 2021 8:51:46 GMT 1, Sometimes these thing happen without any bad intentions or anybody wanting to “out” anybody..
Last year I bought a painting from one of my favorite artists from a gallery.
When the painting reached me I was so excited about it I sent a pic to the artist telling her how happy I was to add another piece of her work to my collection etc.
Only to discover that the gallerist had told her that they were keeping that work in their private collection and won’t sell it. But apparently when they fell out they changed their mind.
I didn’t know the back story nor were I trying to out anyone. It just happened because the gallerist lied. They should have had the decency to tell her they decided to sell the work.

No idea but another possibility that it was done out of spite. Perhaps the artist and/or agent didn't provide access to work or access only at a higher price, etc.
Advice- assume what you say will be repeated or probably repeatedly one day. It can avoid disappointment and upsetting situations, etc

What to do when...., by Sebastian Dusseldorf on May 7, 2021 11:03:43 GMT 1, Also, why did you sell that piece of art? Is it because you don't actually like it that much? Why worry about the reputation with artist? Is it because you like it a lot, but needed money for something more essential than art? Why worry about your reputation with the artist?
I know it sucks, if somebody doesn't keep there word. But you probably will get the most out of this, if you explore why this situation that you brought yourself in pains you so much.

What to do when...., by Raph on May 7, 2021 12:12:50 GMT 1, I don't understand where is the matter here...
Nothing prevent you from selling something you own.
If it is hard for you to don't care and you made a gain on this transaction, you can propose a % to the artist or propose the artist to give his part to a caritative association?
Honestly, the artist himself shoulddon't care and know that once sold, a piece of art has its own life and can be resold by its successive owners.
Edit: and if he boycott you for that, it is a good reason not to buy any more work from him.

What to do when...., by moron on May 7, 2021 12:46:17 GMT 1, If the son is slagging you off to the artist. There's not much one can do apart from contacting the father and letting him know. I'm sure the artists see's through what the son is saying and has no animosity towards you. I'm sure that this sort of thing happens quite often and at the end of the day, artists are business minded so shouldn't be concerned if someone re sells one of the art works. A lot of the art game is very fake anyway.

What to do when...., by Balboa on May 7, 2021 15:07:34 GMT 1, I sold a Grin Reaper and a signed J&J around 2008 for less than £2K each.
I emailed Banksy to tell him I had sold them and asked if he wanted any money because I had made a profit from his work.
He replied, asking me to make a donation to a charity that helps the visually impaired.
I sponsored a guide dog through their twelve months of training.

What to do when...., by Ildefonso77 on May 7, 2021 16:16:41 GMT 1, This thread is interesting and I can relate somewhat. Only reason why I’d want to keep sales secret is I want a good standing with the artist and galleries. Relationships are important to me and I like to keep it gold. Sometimes it doesn’t always work out though.
In my case me thinks that the seller likes the artist but For some reason dint like the work so much and was willing To sell privately.
The fact is seller cares about his rep with the artist meaning wants More significant work in the future but by being outed those chances Are nil now.
But why the malicious outing by the son? And why is it his business And does he hold a grudge or vendetta against the seller? Anyone care to fill in the blanks?
This is very interesting. 🕵️

What to do when...., by WOOF on May 7, 2021 16:36:52 GMT 1, Maybe i’m in the minority, but if someone assured me discretion when I sold them a piece from an in demand artist with a career on the rise, and then was responsible for a lack of discretion, I’d name and shame the shit out of them. Like someone else said, this is a business of relationships and this buyer seems to have totally fucked the sellers relationship after promising to do the opposite.
I’d never sell to that person again, and I don’t think I’d sell to anyone defending them either. Poor form.

I think thats called life. Much Butthole.

What to do when...., by Deleted on May 7, 2021 18:06:05 GMT 1, I dont get the issue unless its because you think the artist might backlist you on future releases? Might be the case on a banksy but most lesser artists probably think a bouyant secondary market doesnt do their prices any harm.
