Damien Hirst NFT "The Currency", by J0NNY on Jul 29, 2021 12:51:11 GMT 1, It pains to think that a piece of art I’d love to have in the collection is going to get destroyed because of some hapless yeezy wearing cunt. I know you can’t win them all but this particular loss just feels wrong on every level. More salt in this post than in the Dead Sea.
Saltwater Croc wearer?

Damien Hirst NFT "The Currency", by longshanks on Jul 29, 2021 12:56:12 GMT 1, I'd admit to being salty. Very salty actually. I was fully invested in this, and really wanted to get involved. I wont be able to reach secondary, so this was a chance to own a painting from an artist I've followed since the 90s. Reading some of the crap on Discord is really disheartening

When the NFTs are released, can you see them in your metamask account? I just logged in, not expecting to see the NFT, but really have no idea where I'd be able to find it once it is allocated. Under assets?

Damien Hirst NFT "The Currency", by FЯ on Jul 29, 2021 13:05:31 GMT 1, Honest Question. If in 2 months the NFT was worth (example amount of around 10 ETH) £17,0000 and steadily traded. but the physical print was only going for cost or below with nothing looking up Would you keep NFT or get original. If you want the original, in your scenario obviously sell the NFT and buy the original. The above is called an arbitrage - hence what you wrote makes little sense. It is a question over value vs artwork. If your mindset changed from paper to preferring NFT due to the trading value in the future as well what if it was worth £100k as an NFT in 5 years but still 2k as paper

Hey mate, sorry to hear but be patient there is a meaningful probability of a crypto collapse in any rolling twelve month window. If that happens stuff can sell at ridiculous prices and for sure some NFT holders will be liquidated. Good luck

To be fair though, that crap is the only reason this experiment might work. I’ve still got absolutely no clue as to why someone will take a screenshot over an actual original painting ( or a varied HPM which are really what I consider these to be)

I think they will be available to see in the metamask account under the NFT's. If you are using the desktop extension then it will be there, but you can't view the image.

Strawberry and chocolate donuts are not the same value either. Should they? Depending on the demand

People use NFTs as a store of value. It’s similar to physical art as an investment in many ways but much, much more so. It’s sentiment driven, highly volatile and valued on its last sale. The big difference is you don’t have to store an NFT in the physical world and you can transfer it very easily.

The NFT gives you more optionality and therefore likely more value for the first year:
1. For the first year the NFT is more liquid can be bought or sold more quickly and probably on the margin with lower transaction costs than the physical 2. The NFT can within the first year be transferred into physical at any point. This doesn’t work the other way around i.e. if you buy an actual physical for someone that is all you will ever have 3. The NFT gives you the option of Hirst adding some goodies, who knows what these are but can be distributed on-chain as the can always identify owners. Maybe the physical has some potential here for the original buyers or if there is a COA but I doubt it 4. The NFT can be held as an NFT for ever
So broadly I think within the first year there can be some price discrepancy and I think away from a crypto collapse the NFT has more fundamental value than the physical. That said the physical is awesome so there will be multiple buyers at £2k and a diminishing curve of buyers up to Xk – what is X I have no idea.
Longer term past the conversion period the correlation between physical and NFT should collapse arguably towards zero. By that I mean the markets may very well become completely unrelated and the price can diverge massively. Where they go I have no idea
Post script: the physical may and probably will give you personally way more enjoyment in the first year but I don’t think this will impact the relative market values

Selling in very different markets. The market for Hirst paintings is well established and people know the approximate value of a Hirst this size and from this big a series (probably well below £17k). There's a ceiling on what people would pay.
The NFT market is in its infancy and the value of cryptocurrencies changes so much that thinking of it in terms of equivalent in $/£ is close to meaningless. Someone might have bought Ethereum at £100 that is now worth £1,600, so buying something for £17k isn't that big a deal. When you're buying with an insane currency, prices can also become insane.
In a year, a painting and an NFT (which will then be an NFT forever) will likely have very different values. Just uncertain which will be worth more.
This is my understanding of it, at least. I may well be wrong.

I was in the same boat as you. But, now that I’ve read a little more into it, the capitalist pig in me wants to see how this plays out.

Damien Hirst NFT "The Currency", by kdog on Jul 29, 2021 19:03:35 GMT 1, People use NFTs as a store of value. It’s similar to physical art as an investment in many ways but much, much more so. It’s sentiment driven, highly volatile and valued on its last sale. The big difference is you don’t have to store an NFT in the physical world and you can transfer it very easily. I can understand the ease of transfer argument - but not much else. If I had a Ferrari outside my house, then wouldn't an NFT saying I own a Ferrari be worth the same amount?
You can drive a Ferrari.
The only thing you can do with a painting is look at / display it. Other than that it’s just (hopefully) a store of value. NFTs are useless - literally. They’re just a store of value.
People talking about displaying their NFT or printing it off. It’s nothing more than a COA that people put enough trust in to believe it has value. That value is based on its resale price which we hope is more than its last resale price.
I’m not down on NFTs, I think they’ll hold more value than the physical and I think this is a great experiment in art ownership and value. I’m planning on taking the physical, but I’m waiting to see what the NFT does first because the physical piece has an upper value limit for me.
