I've no reason to doubt you, but most people will either want provenance, or will offer you a price that reflects that it doesn't have it. I've bought items that have no provenance and successfully authenticated later, but I've also bought stuff that turned out to be a complete lemon! That was factored into the transaction, though. It's like trying to sell a Banksy without the PC certificate; someone may buy it, but you won't get the money you want. If you don't have provenance then you may be in for a shock; as others have suggested, I'd keep it on your wall, knowing that it's real, rather than sell it on to people who don't... |

I see both sides here. Iโd have no hesitation buying off someone if they could give some decent first hand account of provenance and I have done before. I just got a hand written note from the seller explaining how they acquired the work. However, it I ever needed/wanted to sell the same item years down the line, the provenance can become a bit hearsay when second hand. But if you have other contemporaneous docs such as a record of Hirstโs visit to the location and maybe even a business card or LinkedIn page from person who was there at the time, then youโre on good ground in my book.
